Seven file for Sharpsburg races

SHARPSBURG - With the filing deadline in Sharpsburg's election less than a week away, seven people have filed to run for mayor and two Town Council seats.

The deadline to file for mayor or council is midnight Monday, Nov. 6, said Election Board Supervisor Anna Louise Jamison.

Those who had filed for mayor as of Monday afternoon are:

- Mayor Sidney Gale, 52, of 109 W. Main St. Gale is director of physician practices for Antietam Health Services. He became mayor on Sept. 11 after George Kesler resigned the post. Before that he served as vice mayor, a position to which he was appointed in 1997 and elected in 1998. He was first elected to Town Council in 1994.

- Earl "Gene" Benner Jr., 45, of 305 W. Main St. Benner ran unsuccessfully for one of two available council seats in 1996, finishing third.


- Debbie Getridge, 44, of 116 E. Antietam St. Getridge is collection manager for the Allegheny Center for Reconstructive Surgery in Hagerstown.

Those running for Town Council are:

- Incumbent Ralph Hammond, 54, of 301 W. Antietam St. Hammond is a construction supervisor for Clark Realty Builders in Washington, D.C. He has served on the council since 1972.

- Incumbent Hal Spielman, 51, of 114 E. Main St. Spielman teaches agriculture at Smithsburg High School. He was elected to the council in 1996.

- Jeffrey Sheffler, 37, of 116 E. Antietam St. Sheffler is engaged to mayoral candidate Getridge. He is evening manager at Battleview Market.

- Joel Thomas, 41, of 106 S. Mechanic St. Thomas is a maintenance mechanic at the True Value distribution center.

To be eligible to run for office, residents must be 21 years old and have lived in Sharpsburg for at least one year prior to the upcoming election to run for office, Jamison said.

The mayor makes $300 a year. Council members earn $30 a year. Both earn an additional $1 for each special meeting they attend, said Treasurer Tom McCall.

Each office has a four-year term.
