Road to volleyball title goes through Smithsburg

Although Williamsport is the defending state champion, the road to the Maryland Class 1A volleyball title will likely go through Smithsburg this year.

The Leopards, ranked No. 2 in The Herald-Mail poll, received the top seed in the 1A South bracket Monday night when the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association announced their brackets at the Baltimore County Board of Education.

If the bracket plays out according to seeds, the Leopards will play the region championship against the Wildcats at home on Nov. 10 or 11. The two teams split thrilling five-game victories this season, with each team winning on its home court.

Despite the Monocacy Valley Athletic League title, the Wildcats, third in The Herald-Mail poll, were given the second seed based on records at the time of the seeding. Smithsburg had completed its regular season Thursday, finishing with a 13-1 record. Williamsport didn't wrap up a matching 13-1 season until Monday night against Boonsboro, two nights too late for the seeding process instituted this year.

Like basketball last season and soccer this season, the top four teams in each region were seeded based solely on winning percentage in regular-season matches. The rest of the teams in each region were then pulled in a blind draw to complete each bracket.

The process also gave Frederick County and Central Maryland Conference champion Thomas Johnson (13-1) the top seed in 3A West. North Hagerstown (9-4) is fifth in that region, which is crowded with gaudy records.

First-round matches will be held Friday. Quarterfinal play is set for Monday, Nov. 6, and semifinal play on Wednesday Nov. 8. Region finals will be played either Friday or Saturday, Nov. 10-11.

1A South: First Round - No. 9 Catoctin at No. 8 Poolesville (winner faces No. 1 Smithsburg). Quarterfinals - No. 5 Hancock at No. 4 Poolesville; No. 6 South Hagerstown at No. 3 Boonsboro; No. 7 Clear Spring at No. 2 Williamsport.

2A West: First Round - No. 9 Linganore at No. 8 Walkersville (winner faces No. 1 Fort Hill). Quarterfinals - No. 6 Middletown at No. 3 J.H. Blake.

3A West: First Round - No. 12 Wheaton at No. 5 North Hagerstown (winner faces No. 4 South Carroll/No. 13 Richard Montgomery winner). Quarterfinals - No. 1 Thomas Johnson vs. No. 8 Kennedy/No. 9 Seneca Valley winner.

4A West: First Round - No. 10 Sherwood at No. 7 Frederick (winner faces No. 2 Walt Whitman).
