Bulldogs trip over Fort Hill

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Who let the dogs out?

One thing's for sure, it wasn't Fort Hill.

The Sentinels, No. 15 in the Maryland state football poll, kept Martinsburg's running game caged the entire game and used the big play to beat the Bulldogs 35-6 Friday night before a standing room only crowd at Cobourn Field.

For the Bulldogs, No. 1 in The Herald-Mail poll, the loss could mean a road trip for the first round of the Class AAA playoffs next weekend.

Martinsburg entered the game No. 6 in the ratings, but the Bulldogs are sure to tumble after the seven teams directly behind them in the rankings won Friday night. The top eight teams in the rankings host first-round games. Pairings will be announced on Sunday.

"We have to put this one behind us, come out here on Monday and get ready for our second season," said Martinsburg coach David Walker. "The good thing is, the teams that we could face in the first round are not going to be as good or as physical as Fort Hill is. At least I hope they're not as good."

Fort Hill manhandled the Bulldogs (8-2) on both sides of the line, limiting them to 1 yard rushing in the first half.

"Our inability to move the ball is what hurt us most," Walker said. "They just physically beat us up and down the field, both ways."

But the Sentinels (8-0) could only manage a single touchdown before halftime, a 32-yard run through the left side of the line by Marcus Trimble as the clock expired in the first quarter.

The second half was a different story, as running back Greg Ewell took over for the Sentinels. He scored on touchdown runs of 48 and 55 yards and a 60-yard punt return. Ewell had an 81-yard punt return called back in the first half.
