Mercersburg girls have answers for St. James

By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

ST. JAMES - Mercersburg Academy coach Heather Prescott knew her team was going to score.

The only question was when?

Mercersburg Academy broke a scoreless tie with one minute remaining before halftime Wednesday when junior Cassie Blum scored through the middle on an assist from senior Ashley Frankel, leading the Blue Storm to a 2-0 girls soccer victory over St. James.

"This was a game for the offense today," Prescott said. "That first goal was bound to happen. It was just a matter of time. Cassie Blum is a strong girl."

Mercersburg's other goal came midway through the second half when Tori Bush scored on a goal off Frankel's second assist.

"Tori Bush took a risk in changing positions and it paid off," Prescott said. "She switched from stopper to center half. She usually doesn't play up there."

Prescott was pleased with Mercersburg Academy's victory over St. James (2-10-1).

"We have been working towards this all season," Prescott said. "I am happy with the quality of their performance. We had good teamwork. The defense has been working on transition play and counterattack. So, they have been able to get the ball out and back up to the forwards quickly."

The Blue Storm (2-10) outshot the Saints, 9-4.

"We were much better and much more competitive this year than what we were a year ago during our first season," St. James coach Chris Hughes said. "Most of our players are still sophomores and younger. We should keep getting better in the next couple of years. Mercersburg Academy's defense was solid. They were able to prevent us from getting any real clear shots."
