Reception to be held after Roy funeral

A free reception will be held at the First Hose Co. of Boonsboro social hall Saturday following the funeral of a Keedysville sailor who died in the USS Cole explosion.

Friends and family may view Navy Fireman Patrick Howard Roy's flag-draped closed coffin at Salem United Methodist Church, 25 S. Main St., from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

The funeral on Saturday will start at 2 p.m. and the reception dinner will be served around 4 p.m., said Don Shumaker, president of the First Hose Co. of Boonsboro.

"They live in our first-due area and we felt we should do something for them," said Shumaker.

Shumaker spent much of the day Wednesday organizing the reception for the estimated 350 people expected to attend the funeral, he said.

He felt compassion for the family for the loss of their son and wanted to reach out to them, he said.

Shumaker solicited donations from area businesses, who generously responded, but additional donations of food would be a help since he can't be sure exactly how many people will show up, he said.

Firefighters and auxiliary members will serve and clean up after the reception, he said.

Shumaker said he has talked to members of the family and they are expected to attend.

A call placed Wednesday evening to the home of Kate Brown, Roy's mother, was unanswered.

Roy died Oct. 12 in the Yemeni port of Aden in an apparent terrorist act.

He will be buried in Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg.
