Seeding system adds spice to soccer draw

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association has moved its partial-seeding technique into the postseason for boys and girls soccer for the first time this season.

Despite the improvement, area fans will still see some strange matchups.

The boys and girls draws were held Monday night in Baltimore for this year's tournament, which starts with first-round games this Friday and Saturday across the state.

As was adopted in the basketball draw last spring, the top four teams in each region - based solely on win-loss percentage in the regular season - were given the preferential spots in the draw. All other teams were drawn randomly and placed into the bracket.

The biggest surprise is in the Class 2A West boys bracket, where Middletown is the top seed despite only a 6-6-1 overall record. The catch is, three of the Knights' losses came in tournaments and are therefore discarded.

The flip side of that is the Williamsport girls in Class 1A West, where the Wildcats are ranked fourth. Williamsport is 8-4-1, but two of its wins came in the Washington County tournament and were excluded.

First-round matches will be played Friday or Saturday. Quarterfinals are scheduled for Oct.31-Nov. 1, with the semfinals set for Nov. 3-4. Region championships will be played on election day, Nov. 7. The Herald-Mail will runs times as soon as it receives them from athletic directors.

Brackets for all four regions in all classes can be found at Click on "sports", then on which tournament you would like to view.
