Vehicles damaged in Smithsburg area

SMITHSBURG - Vandals wielding clubs or a similar objects damaged several vehicles in the Smithsburg area Friday or Saturday, Washington County Sheriffs' deputies said.

Deputies received calls from residents on Bradbury Avenue, Edgemont Road and Sandstone Drive, complaining that their vehicles had been damaged between midnight Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday.

The damaged vehicles were a 1990 Jeep Cherokee, 1984 Nissan 200SX, 1997 Mercury Sable, 1999 Mercury Cougar and a 2000 Hundai Tiburon.

Damages are estimated at more than $4,000.

Accidents reported on Interstate 70

CLEAR SPRING - At least three related accidents east on Interstate 70 caused traffic to back up for around nine miles Sunday afternoon, Maryland State Police said.


Police said two cars collided when one slowed down to admire Washington County's foliage around 4 p.m.

As police investigated that accident at least two others occurred when traffic backed up and cars rearranged each other.

Additional information was unavailable Sunday evening.

Garage fire put out in Waynesboro

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - A passerby noticed a small fire in a garage Sunday, which allowed fire fighters to quickly extinguish the blaze.

Fire officials believe the fire started when an electrical short developed while a battery on a van in the garage was being charged, said Steve Biesecker, spokesman for the Waynesboro Fire Department.

The 2 p.m. fire, which occurred in the first block of Cleveland Avenue, was mostly contained to the van, Biesecker said.
