Friday's Local Roundup - Wildcats clinch MVAL soccer title


WILLIAMSPORT - No. 3 Williamsport shut out FSK 3-0 to win its second straight Monocacy Valley Athletic League championship Thursday.

Jason Knicley scored two goals, Todd Knepper had one goal while Greg Fischer, Carlos Gomez and Jarod Spessard each had an assist for the Wildcats (12-2, 9-0). JV: Williamsport, 3-0.

North 6, Brunswick 0

Mike Brooks scored three goals and Filip Simic added two goals and an assist as the No. 4 Hubs outshot Brunswick, 18-5.

Dustin Showalter added a goal, while Stephen Sachariah, Luke Mongrain and Ryan Flurie added assists for North (13-1, 7-1). David Chaney had five saves for the shutout. JV: North, 4-0.


Smithsburg 5, Boonsboro 4

BOONSBORO - Smithsburg raced to a 5-1 lead at halftime and held off No. 9 Boonsboro.

Journey Nicodemus scored first for Boonsboro, but Smithsburg responded with five straight goals. Matt Holsinger (one goal and one assist), Brian Seifarth (one goal and one assist), Seth Newman (goal off a penalty kick), Justin Bates (two goals) and David Seifarth (one assist) accounted for Smithsburg's offense.

Ron Pongratz, Chris Lantz (one assist) and Austin Gray (one assist) each had second-half goals for Boonsboro.

Waynesboro 4, Goretti 2

Brian Sandifer had two goals and Zach Tanner added a goal and two assists as Waynesboro defeated St. Maria Goretti.

John Weber had a goal and an assist for the Indians (6-11-1), while Phil Woodring added an assist.

Ben Hood scored both goals for the Gaels (5-8-2), wgile Tim Miller picked up an assist.

Middletown 2, Walkersville 1

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Ross Cherish and Jeff Manning both scored in the first half for Middletown (6-6) in a victory over No. 10 Walkersville.

Goalie Andrew Brown recorded five saves for the Knights. Adam Clay scored only goal for the Lions (5-7-1). JV: Middletown, 5-0.

Flint Hill 3, Mercersburg 1

McLEAN, Va. - The Blue Storm tied the game with five minutes left in regulation, but Flint Hill scored twice in overtime.

Josh Grahe scored from 20 yards out on an assist from Adam Fang for Mercersburg (3-5-3). Chris Balaban had eight saves.

Jefferson 3, Hedgesville 0

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Jefferson shut out Hedgesville in the West Virginia sectional tournament and will advance to the semifinals to face defending state champion Morgantown on Saturday.

Eric Brown and Scott Bucey both scored goals and Matt Boyer converted on a penalty kick for Jefferson (6-9-1). Dylan Beitz, Joe Dumer and Joe Humeas all had assists.


Severn 2, St. Johns-PH 1

SEVERN, Md. - Lindsey Biles scored the winning goal in double overtime for Severn.

Noureen Khan scored the only goal for No. 6 SJPH (11-4-1). Linda Horcasitas had the assist.


Smithsburg 3, Boonsboro 0

SMITHSBURG - No. 2 Smithsburg (12-1, 7-1) swept Boonsboro 15-6, 15-3, 15-12. Lauren Resh had nine service points, nine digs and six kills while Melanie Whitt had five digs and three service points for the Leopards.

Boonsboro was led by Jennifer Frey, who had three service points, four digs, five blocks and three kills. Katie Ambrose, who had three service points, eight digs and three kills, and Mandy Binder, who had two aces, three digs, three kills and five assists. JV: Smithsburg, 2-0

Hancock 3, Paw Paw 0

HANCOCK - Hancock defeated Paw Paw 15-1, 15-2, 15-1. Alicia Barnard had 14 service points and nine aces, Lacey McCusker had four service points, two aces and six kills, Bethany Sterner had 16 service points, nine aces and four assists, Darlene Marshall had six assists and Heather Fowler had five kills for Hancock.

Mercersburg 3, Goretti 0

Brett Stone had four blocks and eight kills, but the Gaels fell to 1-16 with a 15-13, 15-4, 15-3 loss to the Blue Storm. JV: Mercersburg, 2-1.

Hedgesville 3, Jefferson 0

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - No. 4 Hedgesville (21-2) came back from a 12-3 deficit in the first game to win 16-14, then closed out Jefferson 15-6, 15-10.

Carrie Spies led Hedgesville with 11 service points, while Carrie Jackson and Jenny Merica had eight service points each.

Greencastle 2, Fairfield 0

FAIRFIELD, Pa. - Aimee Eshleman had 15 service points, including six aces, as No. 8 Greencastle-Antrim swept Fairfield.

Tamyra Toth had seven service points and 14 assists, while Mallory Earhart had three kills for the Blue Devils (14-1, 14-0 Mid Penn Capital).

James Buchanan 2, West Perry 0

ELLIOTTSBURG, Pa. - No. 10 James Buchanan swept West Perry 15-8, 15-2. Sammy Brown had 25 digs, eight service points and two aces, Emilee Seville had seven kills and Emily Stoner had 24 assists for JB (12-5).

Southern Fulton 2, Hyndman 0

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Tia Hixon had four kills and Erin Bain had 15 service points for Hancock (10-7) in a sweep of Hyndman. JV: Southern Fulton, 2-0.

SALISBURY, N.C. - Williamsport graduates Ann Fulk had 41 assists and Lettie Wilkes had 10 digs in Catawba's 15-12, 15-9, 12-15, 15-12 loss to Presbyterian.


Frostbite League

JMS 20-13, Jerry's Sports 18-24: Ricky Malloy and Rob Wendt had four hits in JMS' win in the first game and Steve Prestgrave had four hits in the second game for JMS. Brian Wagner, Brad Weaver and Ed Brien had four hits and Alan Mullenden had two home runs in the first-game loss for Jerry's. Jerry Springer and Weaver had four hits and a home run and Alan Largent had four hits for Jerry's in the second-game win.
