Roundup - Knights clinch MVAL crown


MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Brenda Shakely scored two goals as No. 2 Middletown clinched the Monocacy Valley Athletic League title by defeating No. 10 Catoctin 5-1 on Monday.

Erica Miss, Jessica Cline and Steff Burroughs each scored once for the Knights (12-1, 9-0).

Cyndi Benjaman scored on a penalty kick for the Cougars (5-6, 2-4). Michele Bennett had 17 saves for Catoctin.

JV: Middletown, 3-0.

Smithsburg 6, South 0

Morgan Church led No. 7 Smithsburg (9-4) with two goals and two assists. Kyley Thompson had two goals, while Jennifer Spruil had a goal and an assist. Megan Leuttrell added a goal. Alyson Daughtridge and Erin Morrisey both had one assist. Keeper Lauren Church recorded her seventh shutout.


Smithsburg 2, FSK 1

UNION BRUDGE, Md. - Seth Newman had a goal and an assist as to lead Smithsburg over Francis Scott Key. Matt Holsinger added a goal for the Leopards (3-7-1), while Brandon Rethemeyer had 21 saves.


Frederick 2, Walkersville 0

FREDERICK, Md. - Austin White and Dan Corbin scored, while Matt Slagle and Tim McCallan added assists for No. 7 Frederick (8-3-2) in a win over No. 10 Walkersville. Justin Shade had four saves for the shutout.

JV: Frederick, 7-0.

G'castle 4, Berm. Springs 0

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - John Bitner had a goal and two assists to lead No. 1 Greencastle over Bermudian Springs. Shuiaming Peng scored once and had and assist, while Micah Laughlin and Justin Blair scored the other goals for Greencastle (13-3-1). Josh Meketa and Matt Fridley each had an assist as the Blue Devils outshot Bermudian Springs, 30-3.

Mechanicsburg 2, C'burg 1

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Kevin Roland scored for No. 2 Chambersburg (10-7-2), while Nathan Wingerd added an assist.

Heritage 1, Shalom 1

David Brubaker scored for Shalom Christian, but Jeremy Grove's goal off a Ryan Marquiss assist gave Heritage (7-3-2) a tie. Heritage keeper Justin Cline had 12 saves.


Grace 3, Mercersburg 0

Lauren Durbin lead Grace with 11 kills and three blocks, while Stephanie Anthony had seven kills and three blocks and Heather Kendall had 22 assists for Grace Academy (13-0).

Glenelg 3, Middletown 1

GLENELG, Md. - Despite 10 blocks and nine kills by Aubrey Psau, Middletown lost to Glenelg, 15-9, 13-15, 15-13, 15-9.

Mandy Harshman had 11 aces, three blocks and three assists, while Katie House had four assists for the Knights (5-7).

TJ 3, South Carroll 1

SYKESVILLE, Md. - Kristen Palm had 13 service points, 10 kills, five aces and six digs for No. 9 Thomas Johnson (10-1) in an 18-20, 17-15, 15-9, 15-11 victory over South Carroll.

Emily Houver had 19 service points and seven kills. Allison Koski had eight kills, 18 assists and eight service points. Ashley Cregger had 10 blocks and seven kills for TJ.

JV: South Carroll, 2-0.

Liberty 3, Frederick 2

FREDERICK, Md. - Ashley Bush led Frederick (5-7) with 17 blocks, while Sydney King had 14 blocks in a loss to Liberty, 15-4, 7-15, 16-14, 7-15, 15-5. Chelsea Reidy added seven aces for the Cadets.
