Roundup - Smithsburg wins Martinsburg Invitational


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - No. 2 Smithsburg survived a marathon day, defeating West Virginia AAA champion Parkersburg 15-9, 5-15, 15-8 in the final of the Martinsburg Invitational.

Heather Ashley finished with 56 kills and 25 blocks as the Leopards swept through pool play before beating Frankfort in the quarterfinals and beating No. 8 Greencastle 15-9, 15-6 in the semifinals. The final against the Big Reds didn't start until almost 10 p.m. after the tournament started at 8:30 a.m.

Michelle Feiser had 57 assists and 40 kills and Jenelle Stouffer had 53 assists and 29 points for Smithsburg. BJ Greenwood finished 59-for-59 from the service line and Katy Powell added a team-high 27 digs.

For Greencastle, Kathy Kershner had 24 service points, Tamyra Toth had 100 assists, Tonia Petersheim had 33 kills and 18 blocks and Amy Eshleman had 18 aces and 12 digs.


Hill School 5, Mercersburg 1

POTTSTOWN, Pa. - Adam Siak had two goals and Teddy van Beuer had a goal and three assists as the Hill School beat Mercersburg Academy on Saturday.

Jamie Blackburn scored off a Garth Semple assist for Mercersburg's only goal.

The Blue Storm falls to 3-4-3.

Shepherd women fourth

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Shepherd College women's tennis team finished fourth at the West Virginia Conference this weekend.

For the second straight year, West Liberty dominated the tournament, winning all six singles titles and two of the three doubles championships.

West Virginia Wesleyan was second, followed by University of Charleston.

Three singles players - Krysten Ryder, Katie Benisek and Alexis Lopez - advanced to the semifinals. Jamie Cutright, Leigh Burch and Lisa Miehls were eliminated in the quarterfinal round.

Cutright and Benisek advanced to the semifinals in No. 1 doubles.


Rams go 2-1 in quad

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Shepherd volleyball team went 2-1 at the Regional Quad at the University of Charleston this weekend.

The Rams (25-7) beat WVU-Tech and Concord after a first-day loss to Charleston.

Cassie Leonard had 19 assists, while Mary Carroll had 11 digs and seven kills in the win over WVU-Tech.

Laura Roberts had 15 kills and 10 digs, Nicole Guito had 48 assists and 11 digs and Kim Pirsinio had seven kills and seven digs against Concord.
