Photo Contest Winner

Always on the lookout for an interesting photo, G. William Davis knew the sight of a sailboat on the horizon, battling choppy water under threatening clouds would be a great shot.

The 44-year-old Mt. Airy, Md., man was right, and judges of The Herald-Mail/FirstLook Photo's Amateur Photo Contest selected Davis' picture "Best of Show" out of 565 entries.

Davis said he took the picture while on a snorkeling trip with friends several years ago on Sanibel Island off the Gulf Coast of Florida. He said he has displayed the photo at home until his sister, Bette Evans of Hagerstown, suggested he enter it in the contest.

"It was just a fluke. My sister was visiting and brought along a clip of the contest announcement," Davis said.

He titled the picture "The sea is so great and my boat is so small," after a sign former President Jimmy Carter kept on his desk when he was in the White House.

Davis, a lieutenant with the U.S. Park Police, said photography has been a hobby of his for several years.
