Maryland House Speaker Casper R. Taylor Jr., D-Allegany, promoted recreational trails and a fiber optic cable being laid along state highways during a Friday meeting of officials from cities and towns across the state.

Greenways, recreational trails, parks and more "green space" connect cities and counties and promote economic development, Taylor said.

He said the new fiber optic cable will give remote parts of the state instant access to the rest of the world.

Taylor spoke during a morning meeting of the Maryland Municipal League's legislative conference at the Ramada Inn & Convention Center in Hagerstown. About 200 elected and appointed officials from cities and towns across Maryland were expected to attend the conference, which ends today.

During the conference, Municipal League members will set their legislative agenda for the upcoming General Assembly session.

Topics include water and sewer master plans, the Urban Legacy Grant program, earlier property tax billing for newly annexed properties and liability limits in the Local Government Tort Claims Act.
