Local Heart Walk raises $40,000

Approximately 300 walkers at Long Meadow Shopping Center raised an estimated $40,000 Saturday morning for cardiovascular research, an organizer said.

The American Heart Association Heart Walk helps raise awareness of the need for fund-raising, said Cathy Hanson, director for the Washington County walk.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in Washington County, with stroke the third leading cause, Hanson said.

Walkers chose a 2.5-kilometer route or a 5-kilometer route through the shopping center and nearby residential streets, Hanson said.

Several local businesses donated food and beverages.

County Market provided food; B.P. Lesky Distributing Co., bottled water; Bagel-lisious, bagels; Dave's Wholesale Produce, bananas and other fruit; Rinehart Orchards, apples; and Shenandoah's Pride, milk and juice.
