Mother makes statement of pride

The following is a statement by Kathy Brown, Patrick Roy's mother:

"I am proud of Pat. He has always lived his life fully, having a clear idea of right and wrong and always standing firm for his beliefs. As much as he is a most gentle individual, he is also a fierce and loyal team player.

"Pat loves the out of doors. One of his greatest loves has been sailing. He has participated in the Outward Bound Sailing School in Rockland, Maine, where he demonstrated his fine sailing skills as well as his intuitive and heartfelt leadership skills.

"Although he grew up in Keedysville, Washington County, Md., he attended and graduated high school (1998) at Storm King School, Cornwall on Hudson, New York. On this campus, he is extremely well loved by staff, faculty, students and their families. His generous, selfless and gracious personality has been a great asset to that community.

"Joining the USN in August 1998 was a huge and important step for him. He embraced it fully and his family supported him, as always, in his decision.

"Our families are together now and we all are holding Pat gently and firmly in our hearts. Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt love go out to all the crew and their families aboard the USS Cole."
