Roundup - Church's prayers answered for Leopards


SMITHSBURG - Morgan Church had two goals - including the game-winner in the second half - and added an assist as No. 9 Smithsburg downed No. 6 Walkersville 3-2 in Monocacy Valley Athletic League action Thursday.

Kyley Thompson also scored for the Leopards, while Alyson Daughtridge and Amy Metz added assists.

Erin Carraghan and Hannah Matesa scored for the Lions.

Boonsboro 2, South 0

Alli Fries scored with an assist from Ashley Gossert and Gosert scored with an assist from Brittany Grove in the second half, leading Boonsboro over South Hagerstown.

Cara Peckens had two saves for the shutout for Boonsboro (4-5-1, 3-3-1), which outshot South, 29-4.


Boonsboro 3, Catoctin 1

BOONSBORO - Chris Lantz had two goals and an assist as the Warriors improved their record to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the MVAL.


Rob Pongratz scored, while Brandon Burley had two assists and Joel Forsyth had one for Boonsboro. Ben Whitney scored the only goal for the Cougars on an assist by Dennis Hill.

Middletown 1, Smithsburg 0

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Paul Vandre scored with an assist from Jon Kisas at the 38-minute mark of the first half, leading Midletown (5-6, 4-3) over Smithsburg.

Andrew Brown made three saves for his fifth shutout of the season.

Walkersville 0, FSK 0

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Andrew Lebo made three saves as Walkersville played Francis Scott Key to a scoreless tie. Walkersville (5-5-1, 2-3-1) outshot FSK, 24-7.

JV: Walkersville, 1-0.

Williamsport 4, Brunswick 1

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Jason Knicley scored three goals, powering No. 6 Williamsport over Brunswick. Knicely scored the game's first goal with an assist from Carlos Gomez, then scored the second goal unassisted for Williamsport (10-2).

Joe Secoges scored for Brunswick to cut the score to 2-1 early in the second half, but Knicely scored his third goal on an assist from Ben Jordan for a 3-1 lead. Gomez finished the scoring with an assist from Jordan.

South Carroll 2, Frederick 1

WINFIELD, Md. - Matt Slegle scored No. 5 Frederick's only goal on a penalty kick in a loss to South Carroll. Frederick is now 7-3-2.

Hedgesville 2, Martinsburg 0

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Zach Hines and Jason Hollen scored for No. 9 Hedgesville (9-6-2). in a win over No. 8 Martinsburg. Travis Hines had five saves for his eighth shutout of the year.

Highland View 9, Broadfording 1

Will Iverson had a hat trick and an assist for Highland View (7-3-2).

Eduardo Bollotai had two goals, while Andrew Williams, Mark Nomura, and Eric Martin each had one. Martin had two assists.


FSK 3, South 0

Allison Wine had four kills, eight service points and five blocks to lead South in a loss to the Eagles. Carrie Shank had six kills for the Rebels.

Boonsboro 3, Clear Spring 2

CLEAR SPRING - Boonsboro rallied to defeat Clear Spring, 10-15, 15-7, 13-15, 15-8, 15-2.

Meg Sholty has 11 service points and three digs, Kelly Baldwin had 13 service points with two aces, three digs and eight kills, Katie Ambrose had 17 service points, six digs and five kills, Leah Easterday had nine service points, 17 assists and nine kills and Mandy Binder had nine service points, three digs, 16 assists and eight kills for Boonsboro (7-5).

Renee Repp had 12 points and five assists to lead the Blazers. Amie Eichelberger had 12 service points and three assists, while Megan Springer had 11 points and Tara Myers had seven kills for Clear Spring.

JV: Clear Spring, 15-4, 8-15, 15-3.

Catoctin 3, Walkersville 0

THURMONT, Md. - Heather Sharpes had 18 service points and six kills to lead the Cougars over Walkersville, 15-12, 15-6, 15-1. Sarah Helmick had five blocks for Catoctin (2-8), while Ashley Martins had six kills. JV: Catoctin, 2-0.

Frederick 3, Urbana 1

FREDERICK, Md. - Ashley Bush had eight kills and 11 blocks to lead No. 8 Frederick (5-6) over Urbana, 15-13, 15-8, 11-15, 15-6. Ashley Sowers had six kills, while Chelsea Reedy had 15 assists and Sydney King had six blocks for Frederick.

JV: Urbana, 2-0.

Thomas Johnson 3, Liberty 2

ELDERSBURG, Md. - Erin Maldo had 19 kills, nine blocks, and seven service points to lead No. 9 Thomas Johnson (9-1) over Liberty, 7-15, 15-7, 4-15, 15-13, 15-11. Allison Koski had 13 service points, 22 assists and four kills, while Emily Hauver had 10 kills and nine digs and Allison Conway had 14 service points and four digs. Ashley Cregger had five kills and 10 blocks for TJ.

Chambersburg 2, CD East 0

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Brandy Fore had seven points, including two aces, and Steph VanBrakle had 10 assists, five kills and five points to lead the No. 2 Trojans to a 15-8, 15-3 win in the Mid Penn Commonwealth.

Sarah Kriner added seven kills for Chambersburg (13-1, 11-0).

Greencastle 2, Trinity 0

SHIRESTOWN, Pa. - Amy Eshleman had 10 service points, four kills and eight digs to lead No. 10 Greencastle, 15-1, 15-0 over Trinity. Tomia Peterson had six points, five kills and two blocks for the Blue Devils (16-14, 15-8).
