Martinsburg tops Southern Garrett

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Martinsburg football team gives out a black shirt each week to its most valuable defensive player.

After Friday night's 28-13 victory over Southern Garrett, coach David Walker may have to spring for a whole box.

"As a team, we were struggling offensively early, but the defense picked it up," Walker said. "Special teams was the only way they got on the board, and we can take care of that."

Tied 7-7 at the break, the No. 2 Bulldogs (7-1) turned it up on the Rams (4-2) to win their seventh straight. Martinsburg allowed two first downs in the first 20 minutes of the second half - one when Southern punter Jeremy Haycraft picked up a bad snap and scrambled for a first down.

"Coach told us to pick it physically and come out and hit," Bulldogs' linebacker Mark Ostrowski said. "They were playing physical and they wanted it more than we did in the first half. Second half, we matched them emotionally."

Martinsburg took the lead on its first series of the second half when Joey Yurish hooked up with Brandon Barrett on a 29-yard TD pass after cornerback Jeremy Lear fell down.

Then the Bulldogs took off in the fourth. Nikolai Payne sacked Southern quarterback Josh Sharon in the end zone for a safety and the Bulldogs took the ensuing free kick back into the end zone on Ostrowski's 16-yard run for a 21-7 lead.

The defense continued its dominance. The Rams rushed 23 times for 23 yards in the second half. Their only score came on a 90-yard kickoff return after the Bulldogs returned a fumble for a touchdown.

"We knew we had to put a complete ballgame together," Ostrowski said. "We hadn't done it all year, but we did it today and we won."
