Howard picking Parson for women's hoops post

WASHINGTON - Hagerstown native Cathy Parson will be named head coach of the Howard University women's basketball program at a press conference today.

Howard finished 19-10 last season and won the regular-season title in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

A North Hagerstown High graduate, Parson moves into the spot after serving one season as associated coach at the University of Richmond. The season before that, Parson was an assistant coach and later interim head coach for the WNBA's Washington Mystics.

After graduating as West Virginia's all-time leading scorer in 1984, she was an assistant coach at Providence until 1988, then spent 10 seasons at Christopher Newport College in southeastern Virginia. She finished with a 183-83 record there.
