Warriors serve up a victory

BOONSBORO - Since it was Parents' Night, the Boonsboro Warriors wanted to make sure that their parents were served with some good volleyball.

The Warriors served up a sparkling performance as they defeated the Middletown Knights 12-15, 15-6, 15-4, 15-1 on Tuesday night in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League volleyball match.

"Service points made the difference tonight," Boonsboro coach Kris McGee said. "Middletown was scrappy and, on occasions, we were sloppy. This was an important win, since it was Parents' Night and the last home game. It is always nice to end your home season on a positive note. I am looking forward to finishing strong in the regular season."

Every Boonsboro player got in the serving act: Amanda Frew had 15, Mandy Binder had 12, Katie Ambrose added 11 and Leah Easterday had 10 for for the Warriors (6-5, 4-3), who continue to overcome the handicap of having only nine players on the varsity team.

"For having such a small number of players on the squad, it is impressive to see them work together as a team," McGee added. "Everybody's contribution matters. There was some strong net play tonight by Amanda Frew and Danielle Strite, which really helped the momentum be on our side."

Binder had 11 assists and 10 kills, while Easterday added 11 assists and five kills for the Warriors. Jenn Frey made four blocks and Ambrose added four kills for Boonsboro. Frew had three digs, three blocks and three kills.

Mandy Harshman had 16 assists and Breanne Hathaway added nine kills for Middletown (5-6, 4-6). Erica Young and Amanda Kaufman had eight kills each, while Aubrey Pfau made six blocks for the Knights.

"I thought that we had a lot of hustle in the first and second games. Then our intensity level dropped," said Middletown coach Judy Whims.

Boonsboro won the JV match 15-6, 15-4.
