Roundup - Blazers, Cougars play to scoreless tie


SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Kari Mowen got her first career shutout in the Blazers' biggest game of the year, picking up 19 saves as Clear Spring (3-6-1, 2-1-1) shocked the No. 3 Cougars by playing them to a scoreless tie in the Apple Valley League on Wednesday.

"I told them, 'You broke their back tonight,'" Clear Spring coach Scott Myers said. "We're never expected to be with a team like this. It's a win for us."

Jenniffer Russell hit the post on a penalty kick at end of third quarter to lose the best chance for Jefferson (9-1-3, 5-1-2). JV: Clear Spring, 1-0.

North Hagerstown 4, FSK 0

Lindsay Smith scored twice and Alexa Suiter and Emily Clutz combined on the shutout as No. 5 Hubs picked up a win over Francis Scott Key in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League.


Kaycie Parfitt set up Ellery Hanlin for a goal and Allison Hammond also scored for North (8-3, 5-2).


South Hagerstown 3, Catoctin 0

THURMONT, Md. - Jessie Shadrach had 16 service points, Allison Wine had seven service points and seven kills and Cara Crouse had 13 assiststo lead South Hagerstown over Catoctin 15-9, 15-11, 15-7 in the MVAL.

Larin Canella had four kills and Sara Helmick had 10 points for the Cougars (1-8, 0-5).

South improves to 4-6, 3-2. JV: South Hagerstown, 2-0 (16-14, 15-7).

Waynesboro 2, Red Land 0

LEWISBERRY, Pa. - Becky Toms had 15 kills and 22 digs as the No. 6 Maidens survived their bus breaking down for a 15-11, 15-7 victory Tuesday night in the Mid Penn Commonwealth. Jana Reitz added 10 kills and Savanah Wetzel had 40 assists for Waynesboro (10-3, 7-3). JV: Red Land, 2-0.

Mercersburg Academy 3, Musselman 1

MERCERSBURG. Pa. - Shelane Jorgensen had 13 service points and six kills to lead Mercersburg to a 15-9, 11-15, 15-4, 15-8 win over Musselman. Nikki Barbuzanes had 11 service points, Sarah Nusairait had 10 kills and June Marquiss had nine kills and three blocks for Mercersburg (7-3). JV: Musselman 2-0 (15-13, 15-3).

MCCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Chris Gallon shot a 78 to lead Mercersburg at Great Cove Golf Club. Justin Young shot 86 for Highland View.

North Hagerstown 185, South Hagerstown 194, Brunswick 202

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Matt Hess and Nick Ranieli from North (25-9) tied for medal honors with a 45. Joe Rusenko from Brunswick shot a 46 and Matt Bowen and Danny Norris both had a 47 for South in a nine-hole match at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course.


South 26, Brunswick 6

Jamel Smith scored three touchdowns and rushed for 150 yards to move the Rebels to 6-0. Ben Mertz also scored for South.

Boonsboro 28, Catoctin 6

Brett Morrell scored on punt returns of 50 and 60 yards and added a third score on a 10-yard run as Boonsboro beat Catoctin.

Chad Cline rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown for the Warriors (3-3).


South Hagerstown 26, Brunswick 6

Rigo Valentin scored twice, Josh Bussard returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and Brad Hineman returned an interception for a TD as South (2-3-1) beat Brunswick (4-1).

Middletown 30, North Hagerstown 6

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Shawn Beachley had 15 carries for 165 yards and two touchdowns for Middletown (5-1).


Salisbury wins again

BALTIMORE - Former Williamsport High standout Matt Bowman scored twice and North High alum John Muto had a goal and assist as the No. 11 Seagulls (11-1) defeated Goucher, 5-0, for their ninth straight victory.


Frostbite Softball League

Hatch and Kirk 16-6, Tully's 15-24: Gary Ashby had four hits, while Goose Fowler, Shawn Faith and Mike Rowland each had three for Hatch and Kirk in the first game. In the second game, Randy Herbert, Mike Mertz and Rocky Wills each had four hits, including a home run, for Tully's.
