Eight seek school Board posts
Eight candidates are on the Nov. 7 ballot for the Washington County School Board. Four candidates will be elected to four-year terms on the board. The candidates are: John W. Cohen, W. Edward Forrest, Edwin M. Hayes, Andrew R. Humphreys, Doris J. Nipps, Roxanne Ober, Bernadette M. Wagner and Russell S. Williams.
The Washington County Teachers Association has endorsed W. Edward Forrest, Roxanne Ober, Bernadette M. Wagner and Russell S. Williams in the Washington County School Board race.
The Central Maryland AFL-CIO Council has endorsed W. Edward Forrest, Roxanne Ober, Bernadette M. Wagner and Russell S. Williams in the Washington County School Board race, U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes re-election bid, and Al Gore for president.
In the mail
The Washington County Board of Elections will soon be mailing a sample ballot to registered voters. The purpose is twofold, local Election Director Dorothy Kaetzel said. One is to educate voters, the second is to begin the process to remove the name of registered voters who no longer live in Washington County by having undeliverable sample ballots returned to the Board of Elections.
Two constitutional amendments appear on the Maryland ballot on Nov. 7.
The first question is whether to exempt the Cecil County Board of County Commissioners from the state requirement elections be held every four years. Cecil County wants to have staggered terms with elections every two years.
The second question is whether to authorize the Prince George County Council to buy property "upon a finding of immediate need for redevelopment."
The Washington County PTAs will hold a dinner and School Board candidates forum on Thursday at the Ramada Inn. The dinner starts at 7 p.m. and the forum at 8 p.m. Cost is $25. For more information call Jenny Belliotti 301-739-2126.
The Washington County Association of Student Councils will hold a candidates' forum at 1 p.m., Oct. 18 at the technical high school. Students representatives from the county's eight high schools will question the board candidates. The forum is not open to the public.

Women at the Table meeting
Women at the Table will sponsor a "Voices of Experience" meeting on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Hagerstown Women's Club. The meeting is for women interested in running for office or being appointed to a government position. The speaker will be state Del. Sue Hecht, D-Frederick/Washington County.
