MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Vice President Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, visited Mercersburg Academy on Saturday to watch their son play football.

"It was very exciting," said Mercersburg Head of School Douglas Hale.

"He and his wife were very, very generous with their time," said Hale, who said Gore posed for pictures and signed autographs during his brief visit.

"He was very accommodating to many of our students," said Mercersburg Athletic Director Ron Simar.

"It was not a political visit, it was a personal visit. They're good parents. ... We were careful to honor his space," said Hale, a Tennessee native who once lived in Gore's congressional district.

Hale met Gore during half-time.

"I wished him luck in the general election, but I didn't wish him luck in the football game," Hale said.

The Democratic presidential nominee undoubtedly hopes his campaign turns out better than the game did for Al Jr.'s Sidwell Friends team. Mercersburg Academy defeated the Washington private school, 36-26.

The Gores arrived just before the game started and stayed until just after it ended.

They came by helicopter to nearby Tuscarora Softball Complex, Hale said.
