Berkeley Springs beats Hancock

By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - In his first game back after an ankle injury, senior tailback David Briscoe laid the biggest hurt of all - a loss - on Hancock.

Briscoe rushed for 143 yards on 20 carries and scored on a game-winning 14-yard touchdown run with 1:08 remaining in the fourth quarter as Berkeley Springs pulled out a 20-14 victory over the Panthers.

"David Briscoe played a great game," Indians coach Angelo Luvara said. "David has had a bad high ankle sprain and he has missed the last three weeks. Then he came out and did this. We are real proud of him."

"David Briscoe definetly makes Berkeley Springs run," Hancock coach Bill Sterner said. "It doesn't take too much to get him going. I give all of the credit in the world to Berkeley Springs. They played hard and they kept their heads in the game."

Briscoe's run broke a 14-14 tie, but Luvara gave just as much praise to his offensive line.

"You have got to give credit to the offensive line. They opened up some holes for David. We thought the offensive line was our weak link at the beginning of the year.

"The offensive line has really improved a lot. ... We are really impressed with what they have done."

Senior tailback Chris Dobrzanski led Hancock with 135 yards rushing on 31 carries, including a five-yard touchdown run that gave Hancock (2-3) an early 6-0 lead.

Berkeley Springs (3-4) took the lead 7-6 on Jamie Moore's 80-yard kickoff return, and Mark Rockwell's 8-yard run gave the Indians a 14-6 advantage.

Josh Wills' 8-yard run pulled Hancock back into a tie, setting up Briscoe's winning touchdown.

By the size of the crowd, it was evident that the rivalry still exists between Berkeley Springs and Hancock. "We knew it was going to be a very big crowd tonight," Sterner said. "It was pretty exciting for the kids. The crowd definetly got the kids fired up."
