Murphys named most wonderful

HANCOCK - Hancock Mayor Daniel Murphy and his wife, Debbie, have been named Washington County's Most Wonderful Citizens of 2000 for their community work.

The honor is part of the Maryland You Are Beautiful Awards. The Murphys will be honored at a Nov. 15 ceremony and will be eligible for a state award.

While the honor usually goes to just one citizen, it went to the couple since both do so much good work, said Washington County Commissioner Paul L. Swartz, who presented the award Wednesday.

"Dan and Debbie have done so much for Hancock and Washington County in general," Swartz said Thursday. "They do their work in a very quiet fashion with no fanfare. They aren't out for any applause or anything."

Daniel Murphy said giving the award to both of them "makes it really special for me.

"It was a wonderful little surprise for us," he said. "Debbie and I were very proud and humbled at the same time."

They were nominated by the school improvement team at Hancock Middle-High School for their work, including a successful push for construction of a new school gymnasium, Daniel Murphy said.

In addition to serving as mayor and working as a veterinarian, Murphy serves on the Washington County Ethics Commission and was the school band boosters president.

Debbie Murphy serves on the Washington County Recreation and Parks Advisory Board and is chairman of the Christmas for Others' charity event. She is a member of the Washington County Gaming Commission and immediate past president of the school's parent-teacher association.

There were 48 nominations for the county award, Swartz said.
