By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

BRUNSWICK, Md. - It was truthfully an evenly-matched ballgame.

Both the Smithsburg Leopards and the Brunswick Railroaders scored once during the first half. Both teams then went scoreless in second half and failed to score in both overtime periods, settling for a 1-1 tie in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League.

Smithsburg senior goalkeeper Brandon Rethemyer came through with a spectacular save with two minutes remaining in the second overtime, leaping high to stop Brunswick freshman Elliott Moyer's shot. Rethemyer finished with 10 saves for the Leopards (1-6-1, 1-2-1).

"Our goalkeeper wasn't a keeper until this year," Smithsburg coach Craig Newcomer said. "He has come through with some big saves for us. He made an outstanding save towards the end of the second overtime."

Brunswick junior goalkeeper Eric Quijada made 11 saves.

Brunswick (0-8-1, 0-4-1) got on the scoreboard first in the 17th minute when junior halfback Matt Putnam scored from the left side on an assist by Moyer.

"He has been scoring pretty consistently this year," Brunswick coach David Spiezio said. "He has been our main offense."

Smithsburg tied the score in the 24th minute when midfielder Matt Holsinger took a pass in the middle from midfielder Seth Newman and scored.

"That was a good tight ballgame," Newcomer said. "I think that we dominated the game. We just couldn't finish.

"I feel that we made some changes and all of the elements were here to win. We just have to work on finishing. Brunswick did well at aggressive play to stay in the game."

"I thought that my players played a heck of a good ballgame," Spiezio said. "Both teams did an excellent job of keeping their heads in the game.

"This season has been rough for us. We have went down early in many games this season. Our goal was to stay in the game all the way to the end and we accomplished that."
