Berkeley Springs edges Petersburg

B. Springs points out victory

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Berkeley Springs and Petersburg proved that there is a real reason why they call the game "football."

The foot the Indians used and the one the Vikings didn't ended up being the difference Friday night in a strange game.

When it came down to it, Berkeley Springs' Jason Schetrompf hit the only extra point of the game, providing the difference in a 19-18 victory for the Indians. But it was the kick that Petersburg didn't kick that may have turned the game.

"We kicked extra points better than they did ... we beat them 1 to nothing," Berkeley Springs coach Angelo Luvara said. "But in fact, if they don't go for it on fourth and 34, who knows what happens."

Quite possibly, the Vikings (0-6) could have protected a 12-6 lead and not allowed the short-field touchdown on an 11-yard keeper by quarterback Mark Rockwell and Schetrompf's untimed game breaker.

Petersburg controlled the game statistically, outgaining the Indians, 324-133. But strategically, it was a different story.

With starting quarterback and punter Josh Wratchford sidelined with a sprained ankle, the Vikings had a drive that had a touchdown which would have given them a 18-6 lead called back and turned into the fourth-and-35 decision at its own 30.

After a timeout, Petersburg coach John Moyers elected to go with a fake punt that resulted in a 3-yard gain by Matt Vance, falling far short of the first down and handing Berkeley the ball on the 33.

"We knew we should have punted there," Moyers said. "But we didn't have a guy ready to snap the ball. So instead of rushing someone in and getting a bad snap, we tried the fake."

The Indians (2-4) and Vikings traded scores the whole game with Petersburg leading and Berkeley Springs countering. The Indians took the lead with 2:22 left in the third quarter on Matt Thompson's 8-yard run and shut down Petersburg despite its superior statistics.

"That's why statistics don't count and the scoreboard does," Luvara said.
