Warriors turn bads into goods

By MARK KELLER / Sports Editor

BOONSBORO - The Walkersville Lions were able to call their shots in the first half Thursday night against Boonsboro, getting big gain after big gain seemingly at will and causing Warriors coach Clayton Anders to present his defense with a challenge.

"I told them at halftime you can only say 'My bad' so many times," Anders said. "Sooner or later, you're going to have to start making some plays."

The Boonsboro defense responded, intercepting a pass and stopping the Lions' offensive machine on fourth down on their other three second-half possessions as the Warriors pulled out a 21-14 win in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League.

After giving up 275 yards and trailing 14-13 at the half, the Warriors (2-2, 2-1) buckled down and gave up just 73 the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, the Boonsboro offense went to its bread-and-butter - the running game - to score the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter.

Fullback Eddie Moten did the bulk of the work on a 10-play, 60-yard drive that gave the Warriors a 21-14 lead. Moten carried seven times for 43 yards in that series, which was capped by a 12-yard quarterback sneak by Chris Wright on fourth and 1.

"We tried some things formation-wise in the first half to see if we could get the sweeps going," Anders said. "They started to overshift and opened up the traps and the belly."

Moten got Boonsboro on the board in the first drive of the game, finishing a 63-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run.

Then the Lions (1-3, 1-2) began to run over and around the Warriors. The duo of Cory Hoffman and Pat Calloway combined for 160 yards in the first half, with Calloway breaking three plays of 22 yards or more.

Boonsboro held the Lions out of the end zone on their first drive, but after a short Warriors punt, Calloway took just one play to tie the score. Calloway broke around left end for a 37-yard touchdown and a 7-7 game.

Walkersville took the lead on its next possession, helped by a 68-yard pass play from Jeremy Fellows to Mike Bangh to the Boonsboro 1. Hoffman scored on the next play.

The Warriors pulled within one just before halftime as Wright led the offense on a 79-yard drive with 2:07 remaining.

Wright hit on 4 of 6 passes to get the ball inside the Walkersville 10. Moten eventually scored with 13 seconds left in the second quarter, but the point after was blocked after a low snap to the holder.

"You don't like to miss the PAT, but instead of down seven we're only down one," Anders said. "Just the fight to get back in it was a big boost before halftime."
