Hedgesville defeats Phelps (D.C.)

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Last season, the Hedgesville football team got pulled into a game of penalties and trash talking against Phelps (D.C.), and it cost the Eagles a victory.

This time, with the same scenario setting it up for another fall, Hedgesville refused to crack, running the Panthers into the ground with 335 yards rushing in a 44-0 victory.

"They had to understand that they had to stay focused," Hedgesville coach Dave Lopez said. "Last year, they got us out of our game, and tonight we didn't do that. That's a plus for the kids to see that improvement."

Phelps started the game with an 18-play drive, thanks to a fumbled punt by the Eagles (2-4) and a fake punt to keep the drive alive. But it netted the Panthers only 19 yards, and G.W. Kilmer took the next punt and returned it 36 yards to set up in Phelps territory.

Four plays later, quarterback Sean Moore cruised into the end zone for the lead.

"This feels great," said Moore, who scored two rushing touchdowns and recovered a fumble in the end zone for a third. "There wasn't any revenge factor here. It just felt real good to get our second win."

After that, Hedgesville ran the Panthers over on both sides of the ball. Fullbacks Chris Amenta and David Smith both had 100-yard games and combined for 220 yards and three touchdowns.

"After I took the starting offensive line out, I had them standing together for the rest of the game," Lopez said. "I told them, if you can do that four more times, we've got a chance to win every one of these games."

Meanwhile, the defense held Phelps without a first down over a 21-minute span of the second and third quarters and allowed the Panthers under two yards per play.

It's the kind of effort the Eagles will need to keep their focus over the rest of the season.

"The only way we have a chance is to win the next four to be 6-4," Moore said. "That's still possible at this point, and that's what you work for."
