North trips Catoctin

By ADELINE STAEBLER / Staff Correspondent

THURMONT, Md. - Catoctin football coach Doug Williams says, historically speaking, there is always a big letdown after a big win.

Last week the Cougars upset Middletown. This week they were unable to take the momentum into their game with North Hagerstown and lost, 7-0.

"We were worried about that," Williams said. "I'm not going to say that's the reason why we lost. I really think the reason why we lost was that our offense was shut down."

The Hubs outrushed the Cougars, 204-84. North also gained 10 first downs and held Catoctin to seven.

"I just thought we had to stop their play-action passing and I think our kids did a nice job," North Hagerstown coach Glenn Cross said. "Our front did a nice job of holding their fullback up. I though we shut their option plays down very well and we stopped the play action fast."

Aaron Venables led the Cougars in rushing with 16 carries for 54 yards.

The game remained scoreless through the first quarter with Catoctin controlling the ball most of the time.

The Hubs started a scoring drive with about six minutes left in the second quarter. It ended five minutes and three first downs later when quarterback Tanner Cross weaved the ball in 27 from yards for a touchdown. Travis Yeates kicked the extra point.

"I scored on a play that was kind of where they covered everybody and I just cut the field back," Cross said. "I was supposed to pass but since I saw everybody was closed out I just ran the ball for a touchdown."

"Their quarterback was tough, he's a heck of a runner," Williams said. "That one run he had for a touchdown was a heck of a run, he must have run 100 yards in 25 yards. I think their quarterback was the difference offensively. ... If you take him out of the game, they're not getting a lot of yards."

Cross rushed for 82 yards and Paul Berry gained 75 yards rushing.
