Woman appointed to college board

By BOB PARTLOW / Staff Writer, Martinsburg

MARTINSBURG, W. Va. - Gov. Cecil Underwood has appointed Jane Peters, executive director of the Jefferson County Development Authority, to the board that will oversees the state's college and university system until next year.

Peters, 46, of Shenandoah Junction, wants to bring an emphasis on community colleges to the Interim Governing Board, which will serve until each state college and university gets its own governing board in July. Peters served for eight years on the Shepherd College Board of Advisers.

"I think community college education and training in today's work force is really important and needs to be done right all over the state," she said. It's no longer her job as a development director to just find companies, but to work on making sure they have the workers they need.

"Certainly there's a need for expanded training" that can be provided by the community colleges, she said.

A key issue is how the community colleges will provide the training, she said. Community colleges will either stay with their parent four-year schools, or become separate colleges.

That's a decision that Shepherd will face, and she is uncertain how she feels. It might be better to administer the colleges if they don't split, she said.

Wednesday, Shepherd College will present to the Interim Governing Board a plan to move its community and technical college to Martinsburg. She will participate in that decision.

"I know there have been a lot of questions about that and I certainly want to hear the whole story and the answers to those questions," she said.

Peters said it was her interest in the job and the request from the governor's office that led to the appointment. "It was a little bit of both," she said.

She said it's too early to say whether she would be interested in serving on the new Shepherd College board if she is asked.
