Local golfers head to West Region tournament

The West Region golf championships will be held today at Black Rock Golf Course, beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Sixteen teams will compete in the Class 1A/2A division, with the top three qualifying for the Maryland state meet at College Park. Defending state champion Walkersville and Middletown are the favorites, while Williamsport, Smithsburg, Urbana and Francis Scott Key battle for a spot in the state meet.

Contenders for the individual title include Walkersville's Eli Baltic, Middletown's Travis Ausherman (the Frederick County champion), Williamsport's Steve Miles (the Washington County champion), Smithsburg's Ashley Grier and Seiji Hirai, Clear Spring's Brandon Hendrickson, Boonsboro's Jimmy Fortese and Josh Mitchell, South Hagerstown's Matt Belin and FSK's Ray Sheedy.

North Hagerstown, led by Kevin Barkow, will battle Frederick and Thomas Johnson in the 3A/4A division, with only one team guaranteed a trip to College Park.

All boys who shoot an 83 or lower will qualify for the state championships. Ashley Grier, who finished fifth in the girls championship in 1999, needs a 103 to make this year's championships, played at the University of Maryland.
