Williamsport trips winless Brunswick

WILLIAMSPORT - Kyle Wilson gave Williamsport the lead with about two minutes left in the game and the Wildcats held on to a 28-15 victory over Brunswick in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League game Friday night.

Wilson caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from Adam McAllister to put the Wildcats up, 20-15. Wilson then intercepted a pass by Brunswick quarterback Marcus Smith and ran to the 7-yard line. Danny Rand capped the scoring with a 7-yard burst.

"I was a little rocky the first half," Wilson said. "I was missing my plays and then finally I got into my groove and (McAllister) gave me a good pass and we scored."

Williamsport took the lead in the first quarter when McAllister threw a 16-yard scoring pass to Ross Fox. Ryan McDonald kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Brunswick answered midway through the second quarter when Karl Pfistner scored on a 2-yard run and made the two-point conversion to make a 8-7 lead.

"Over the first two games we had 11 fumbles and lost seven," Brunswick coach Mark Mitchell said. "I thought we played a lot better tonight. We still made some mistakes and blew some coverages at some crucial times, but our play was better. ... this was the best game we've played all year long and I told the kids that this was the first time we played four solid quarters."

Williamsport (2-1, 2-0) regained the lead when McAllister passed 8 yards to Jamie Grossnickle. McDonald's kick made it 14-8 at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Brunswick took the lead briefly when Danny Baugher receovered a Wildcat fumble and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown. Chris owens' kick made it 15-14 in Brunswick's favor.

"Coming in we were just hoping we could capitalize early and if they did make mistakes, capitalize on their mistakes," Williamsport coach Eric Michael said. "Fortunately their fumble we turned into a touchdown before the end of the half. In the fourth quarter, the interceptions we had were key, we returned the favor basically, they fumbled and gave us the score."

Rand rushed for 84 yards for the Wildcats while Matt Allen rushed for 64 yards. McAllister went 7-for-15 in passing. Wilson rushed for 29 yards and blocked a punt in addition to scoring and intercepting Smith.

"I think Kyle Wilson definitely made some big interceptions and made the big touchdown catch, he stepped up," Michael said. "I think Adam McAllister, who was questionable coming into this game, made some key passes for us on offense. Defense in general, every time they moved the ball we stepped up."
