Gauge with radioactive material inside missing

ADAMSTOWN, Md. - A moisture-density gauge containing radioactive material fell off a pickup truck Wednesday in Frederick County, Md., and hadn't been found by evening, according to Frederick County Sheriff's deputies.

Deputies said they were contacted at 5:35 p.m. by an employee of the D.W. Kozera Corp. who said a Troxler moisture-density gauge had fallen out of his pickup truck while he was driving in Frederick County.

He told deputies he had driven on Union Ridge Drive, New Design Road and Doub's Road.

The worker said he and other employees walked around looking for the device but couldn't find it.

The gauge is not hazardous unless its safety seal is damaged, in which case a 6-foot area around the gauge would be contaminated, he told deputies.

Residents in the area have been contacted about the device but deputies did not find it Wednesday evening.

Anyone with information about the lost gauge may call the Frederick County Sheriff's Office at 301-694-1046.
