Tuesday's Local Roundup - Leopards win to stay perfect


SMITHSBURG - Alyson Daughtridge scored twice to lead No. 4 Smithsburg over Hedgesville 5-0 on Monday.

Morgan Church, Becky Hoffman and Kyley Thompson all scored for Smithsburg (5-0), while Lauren Church notched her fourth shutout in five games.

Goretti 1, St. John's-PH 1

Meggan McGill scored for No. 3 Goretti in a game called a tie after double overtime. Noureen Kahn had the only goal for St. John's (3-1-1), and was assisted by Marta Merkle. St. John's keeper Lindsey Weaver had 24 saves, while Lauren Costello had 12 saves for the Gaels.

Martinsburg 3, Mercersburg 0

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Cassie Czaja scored twice and Sara Miller added a goal and an assist as No. 10 Martinsburg (5-4) defeated Mercersburg (1-2). Ashley Minnich added an assist for the Bulldogs.


Greencastle 5, Catoctin 0

THURMONT, Md. - Josh Meketa scored twice and Micah Laughlin, Stephen Hartt and John Bitner added goals as No. 4 Greencastle blanked No. 7 Catoctin (2-2). Matt Fidley had two assists and Zach Barkdool added an assist.

Magruder 4, TJ 3

FREDERICK, Md. - Joe Higbee had a goal and an assist, but No. 1 Thomas Johnson fell to Magruder. Will Eskuchen and Jared Viola also scored for TJ (2-1-1), while Nick Adams added an assist.

Jefferson 1, Shen. Valley 0

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Scott Bucey scored the only goal of the game for Jefferson (3-4-1), with an assist by Joe Dumer.


Southern Fulton 3, Hancock 0

HANCOCK - Lacy McCusker had seven points, three aces and five kills as Hancock (2-2) lost in straight games, 15-9, 15-7, 15-11. Heather Fowler and Alicia Barnard each had six digs with Fowler adding seven points and seven kills. Barnard had four points and four kills. Darleane Marshall had eight assists, Bethany Sterner had six assists and four points and Ashley Norris had four kills for the Panthers. Brooke Francis and Brittany Mellott had five kills. Kelly True and Tia Hixon had 12 service points.

McConn'burg 2, C. Ridge 0

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Niki Chestnut had nine service points and 14 assists as No. 5 McConnellsburg (6-0) won 15-5, 15-0 over Chestnut Ridge. Jade Anthony had five service points and seven kills. Kyla Seville had six service points, five kills and five blocks. Erica Culler had five kills. Elaina Peruch had six service points and three blocks.

Greencastle 2, Trinity 0

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Mallory Earhart had eight service points and three aces for No. 8 Greencastle (4-0) in a 15-7, 15-4 sweep of Trinity. Tonya Petershine added six kills. JV: Trinity 2, Greencastle 0

Grace 3, Goretti 0

Heather Kendall had three kills and eight assists, while Susanna Hill had four hills and Lauren Durbin added three kills in No. 9 Grace Academy's 15-4, 15-6, 15-1 win over St. Maria Goretti. Grace improves to 5-0.


Jefferson 156, Hedgesville 172, Mercersburg 181

at Woodbrier Golf Course in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Jarred Brown was low medalist with a 37 for Jefferson at Woodbrier Golf Course. Brian Clarke had a 40 for Hedgesville, while Chris Gallon had a 42 for Mercersburg (3-12).

Goretti wins tri-meet

Bobby Jones and Elliot Harin both shot 39 to lead Goretti in a tri-meet with St. James and Georgetown Day. Seth Moul, Mike McCormack and Joe Funkhouser also tied for St. James with a 41. Thomas Feldman was low medalist with a 37 for Georgetown Day.


Mills ODAC's player of week

NORFOLK, Va. - Virginia Wesleyan freshman and South Hagerstown graduate Chris Mills was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer player of the week for the week of Sept. 11-17.

Mills had his first collegiate hat trick in a 4-0 shutout of Lynchburg last Wednesday and added a goal and two assists in two other Virginia Wesleyan victories.

Gibson nets AMCC honors

Kirk Gibson, a senior at Frostburg State and a graduate of Middletown, scored six goals in two victories last week and was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference men's soccer player of the week.

Olsen third at Invitational

Frostburg State sophomore Inga Olsen, a graduate of Catoctin, finished third out of 77 runners at the Davis & Elkins Invitational cross country meet, finishing in 21 minutes, 51 seconds.
