Cumberland Valley stuffs Waynesboro

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Fourth-and-8 on the Cumberland Valley 27, and Waynesboro quarterback Ben Leonard dropped back. The senior couldn't escape the rush and was sacked for a 10-yard loss to end a promising drive.

On the very next drive, the Eagles faced third-and-13 at their own 34, and came up with a 60-yard slant play that turned into a touchdown.

It typified how the perennial powerhouse pulled away from the upstart Indians, 52-8, Friday night at Indian Stadium.

"We had something to build on," Waynesboro coach Dave Mahaffey said. "CV showed what a good team does ... they capitalized on mistakes. We just couldn't get over the hump and get the big play when we needed it."

On a night that started miserably, things certainly did get better for the Indians (2-1). Leonard was intercepted on his first pass attempt, which was returned to the 6. The Eagles (3-0) scored on the next play for a 7-0 lead, and a full house feared the worst for the home side - again.

But Waynesboro didn't follow the script. Buoyed by Josh Downin's 41-yard run, the Indians completed a nine-play, 68-yard TD drive with a 19-yard TD pass from Leonard to Mark Von Rembow. Downin's run gave the Indians an 8-7 lead with 5:19 left in the first quarter.

"We came right back," Mahaffey said. "That's one we had to have. The kids showed a lot of fortitude with that."

The Eagles, however, showed even more fortitude, responding with a seven-play touchdown drive that gave them their final lead, 13-8.

After that, the Indians broke down in the crucial moments: Leonard's sack to stop a 14-play drive, a lost fumble on the CV 28, incomplete pass in the end zone at the CV 20, two-yard keeper on fourth-and-6 at the CV 35.

All together, the Indians had six drives stopped in Eagles territory and Downin, who had 103 yards at halftime, only got 95 for the game because of second-half errors. Meanwhile, CV scored three touchdowns late to make a competitive game look like a blowout.

"We got beat by a good team, that's true," Mahaffey said. "But I think we showed some more flashes that we're not as bad as some people said we would be. ...

"We will keep our heads up because of this. We will be back."
