Council supports new department

The creation of a new Hagerstown Department of Recreation received unanimous support from the City Council Tuesday.

A final vote to establish the new department is expected Sept. 26, said City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman.

The new department was going to be called the Department of Recreational Facilities, but Councilwoman Susan Saum-Wicklein said that name implied the new department would not also work with developing programs at the city's facilities such as the golf course and pool.

The recreational programs and facilities previously were managed by the Public Works Department, which will continue to be responsible for streets, park properties, signals, public buildings and fleet maintenance.

Doug Stull, who was manager of Public Works, has been named head of the new department.

Eric Deike, assistant manager of Public Works, has been named acting Public Works manager.

The creation of the new department was announced last month.
