Roundup - Lions win Frederick Co. golf title


FREDERICK, Md. - Travis Ausherman fired a 72, but Walkersville placed two golfers in the top four Wednesday to beat the Knights by two strokes and win the Frederick County Golf Championship title played at Clusterd Spires.

Ausherman beat Catoctin's Danny Novak by one stroke but the Lions' Eli Baltic carded a 75 and Mark Angleberger shot a 76 to lead Walkersville to the title.

Walkersville finished with 311 to edge Middletown by the two strokes. Urbana finished third with 321 followed by Linganore (328), Catoctin (336), Brunswick (340), TJ (349) and Frederick (369).

Highland View 183, Notre Dame 208

Highland View (2-0) defeated Notre Dame in a varsity match at Black Rock Golf Course. Justin Young shot the low score of the day woth a 43 for Highland View and Nathaniel Heigl of Notre Dame shot a 49.


St. James 152, Maret 166

Ryan Moul shot a 1-under-par 35 to lead St. James past Maret at Black Rock.

Seth Moul shot a 37, John Ketzner shot 39 and Mike McCormack 41 for the Saints (2-0).


Walkersville 2, Williamsport 1

WILLIAMSPORT - Becky Pulieri scored Williamsport's (2-1) only goal assisted by Jill Mease in the first half. In the second half Hannah Matesa tied it up and Kelly Martin scored the winning goal for Walkersville. Lindsay Dillinger had six saves for Williamsport.

North 9, Clear Spring 1

Kaycie Parfitt and Erin Snell scored two goals apiece to help the North Hagerstown down Clear Spring.

Ellery Hanlin, Lindsay Smith, Megan Hudak, Nikki Holman and Kendall Brown also scored for North (3-1). Hudak and Corrie Jones each had two assists. Michelle Hickes and Jessica McAllister had one assist each.

Patsy Krenzer had the lone goal for Clear Spring on a penalty shot.

Boonsboro 8, FSK 0

BOONSBORO - Krista Hurley had two goals and two assists to lead Boonsboro to its first win of the season.

Allison Fries and Ashley Reeder each had two goals for the Warriors (1-3). Megan Seiler and Ashler Gossert each had a goal and Lyndsay Hicks and Brittany Grove each had an assist.

Boonsboro won the JV match, 4-0.


St. Andrews 2, St. James 1

POTOMAC, Md. - Matt Sutor scored the only St. James (1-2) goal and keeper Ali Smith had 15 saves.

Frederick 1, Gaithersburg 1

GAITHERSBURG, Md. - Joe Conley scored on an assist by Matt Slagle for Frederick (3-0-1), goalie Zane Campbell had 15 saves.


S. Fulton 2, Fannett-Metal 1

FANNETTSBURG, Pa. - Tia Hixon had 12 points and Kelly True had four kills and six blocks in the Indians' 15-7, 9-15, 15-5 victory. Brittany Mellott and Crystal Strait had three kills each for Southern Fulton (2-3). JV: S. Fulton, 15-6, 15-7.

McConnellsburg 2, Bedford 1

MCCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - McConnellsburg improved to 5-0 with a 9-15, 15-9, 15-9 win over Bedford.

Erica Culler had eight service points, eight kills and two blocks, Kyla Seville had six points and nine kills, Heather Deshong had 12 points and Niki Chesnut had seven points and 19 assists for the winners.

South 3, Middletown 2

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Allison Wine had 18 service points and 18 kills as South Hagerstown beat Middletown 14-16, 15-5, 15-6, 12-15, 15-7.

Kara Crouse had 24 service points, while Jill Watson had 11 points and four kills for South (2-2).

Middletown falls to 2-1.


Middletown 41, T. Johnson 0

FREDERICK, Md. - Dan McCallion had eight rushes for 75 yards and Shawn Beachley scored two touchdowns for Middletown (2-0) against TJ (0-2).


Episcopal 1, St. James 0

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - St. James (2-1) suffered its first loss in regular season play.


HCC sweeps Mont Alto

Rachel Bachtell connected on 10 of 13 kill attempts and score nine service points to lead Hagerstown Community College to a 15-1, 15-5, 15-4 victory over Penn State-Mont Alto.

Jennifer Mentzer had seven service points and Kelli Martin had 17 assists and seven service points for the Hawks. Tiffany Sipes added 10 assists and four kills while Renee Baker produced five kills, five digs and four service points. Bachtell added four digs for the Hawks (12-3, 1-0).


Wash. Co. Junior Football

Smithsburg Jets 20, Hagerstown Raiders 0: Jamal Campbell scored on a 25-yard run, Thomas Morrissey scored on a 60-yard run and Dustin Slavens had an 18-yard touchdown run for the Jets.


NML/Shooters sweep titles

NML/Shooters defeated Joe Corbi 29-9 to win the Williamsport-Pinesburg League slo-pitch softball championship.

NML/Shooters went 28-0 in league play in the regular season and was 6-1 in the playoffs in winning the title. It hit a combined .800 in the championship game. Donnie Crawford was named the league's manager of the year.

NML/Shooters heads to Sterling, Va. this weekend to play in the NSA Class D World Series before leaving Sept. 22 for the ASA Class D Nationals in Montgomery, Ala.

Wash. Co. Flag Football

Hannigan's 27, C & J Construction 0: Larry Winston threw four touchdown passes to lead the Hannigan's offense. Scott Bradford caught TD passes of 15 and 60 yards. Sean Ferguson had an 85-yard TD catch and Joe Pepe had a 68-yard scoring catch.

Miller Lite 20, Gold's Gym 6: Danny Cunningham threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Miller Lite over Gold's Gym. Mark Burger had a 25-yard TD catch and Tom Jones scored on a 50-yard reception.

Crazy Horse/Mountain Dew 12, Black Knights 0: Sean Hackley scored a pair of touchdowns on passes from Buck Walters and Dusty Short.

Smiley Jackson led the Crazy Horse defense with two interceptions.
