Councilmen oppose sign on water tank

Two Hagerstown City Council members said Tuesday they oppose a request that Phoenix Color be allowed to put a sign on a city water tank.

The Hagerstown company would also paint the water tank, which is near the Hagerstown Regional Airport and visible from Interstate 81.

But it is unknown whether the company would assume responsibility for perpetual maintenance of the water tank. Council members agreed to revisit the issue once that question is answered.

Councilman Alfred W. Boyer expressed concern that the city would be setting a bad precedent if it approved the proposal. Councilman William M. Breichner agreed with Boyer. Breichner said the city water tank should advertise the city, not Phoenix Color.
