138th Great Frederick Fair

The 138th Great Frederick Fair, Friday, Sept. 15, through Saturday, Sept. 23, is boasting "64 acres of pure fun and excitement." There will be plenty of country music, too. Mark Wills, Jo Dee Messina, Sawyer Brown and Kenny Chesney are on the bill.

Country music legend Loretta Lynn will perform Friday, Sept. 22, and George Jones, another icon of the genre, will close the week with a concert Saturday, Sept. 23.

In April 1999, Jones celebrated the 40th anniversary of his first No. 1 record - "White Lightning." In June 1999, between recording sessions for "Cold Hard Truth," listening to "Choices," the song that had been chosen to be released as the album's first single, Jones lost control of his vehicle and hit a bridge a mile from his home. He was seriously injured, and although he had been sober for 12 years, Jones admitted that he had "slipped up." Alcohol had been a factor in the crash.

"Choices" is about a man who battles alcoholism.

"It could be the story of my life," Jones said. He wrote about his life in 1996 in "I Lived to Tell It All."

That life, which marked 69 years, Sept. 12, includes 158 hit singles, a stormy marriage to another country-music legend, the late Tammy Wynette, a host of awards and a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame. His Saturday, Sept. 23, performance begins at 7:30 p.m.
