Hearing set Monday for W.Va. shooting case

By BOB PARTLOW / Staff Writer, Martinsburg

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A preliminary hearing is scheduled Monday for Terry Lee Edwards Jr., 21, arraigned Wednesday on a charge of second-degree murder following a Wednesday morning shooting at his 425 E. Race St. house.

The preliminary hearing is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. in Berkeley County Circuit Court.

Several witnesses have been subpoenaed to testify about the events surrounding the death of Steven Ray Post, 20, of Inwood.

The two were friends, according to relatives of Post.

They were drinking near W.Va. 9 Wednesday night with other people, according to court documents filed with the charge by the Martinsburg Police Department, which investigated the incident.

The argument centered on Post's mother's jewelry "and other matters," according to the documents.

Edwards and Ray drove back to Edwards' house, where the argument continued, the documents say. They also say Post got out of the car with a night stick in his hand.

Police said they found a revolver "with one spent cartridge in the cylinder" at the scene.

The police report says Post "had the nightstick in his hand but did not strike (Edwards) or make a threatening motion toward him."

Edwards called 911 and police and medics arrived. Post died about 12:35 a.m.

The penalty for a second-degree murder conviction is 10-40 years.
