Mayor explains resignation

SHARPSBURG - Sharpsburg Mayor George Kesler said Tuesday morning he had been trying to hold off on retiring as mayor, but could no longer do so.

Kesler said he resigned, effective at noon Monday, for personal reasons. He would not elaborate.

Vice Mayor Sidney Gale, who is now mayor, found Kesler's letter of resignation at Town Hall before Monday night's Mayor and Town Council meeting.

"I've been trying to avoid this for the past six months. I was hoping to be able to finish out the year without resigning," Kesler said.

"I want to apologize to Sid Gale. I know he would rather stay as councilman than mayor, but I had to do what I did," Kesler said.

Last week Kesler announced he would not run for re-election in November because he was worn out.

Although he was diagnosed with bladder cancer two years ago, Kesler said that wasn't why he planned to retire and that he was now cancer free. He reiterated Tuesday morning that his health is good.
