Gaels win with big second half


SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - No. 3 St. Maria Goretti used a five-goal explosion in the second half, including a hat trick by sophomore Marrett Diamond, to beat No. 4 Jefferson 5-2 Tuesday night in an early Apple Valley League showdown.

Jefferson (4-1, 3-1) got on the board in the fourth minute on an unassisted goal by Lindsay Edwards, and the score remained 1-0 at the half. Erin Ryan tied it for the Gaels (5-0, 4-0) six minutes into the second half, and two minutes later, Diamond got her first goal from Bobbie Johnson for the 2-1 lead.

Diamond scored again in the 65th minute, and Ryan got her second goal seven minutes later from Johnson and Meggan McGill for a 4-1 lead. Jefferson got to 4-2 on Laura McIlroy's goal off a pass from Jenniffer Russell, but Diamond got her last goal from Ryan to close it.


Lauren Costello had 12 saves for Goretti, which outshot the Cougars, 15-14. Beth Walsh had eight saves for Jefferson.

SJPH 6, Takoma Academy 0

TAKOMA PARK, Md. - Noreen Khan and Marta Merkel each had two goals and an assist to keep the Vikings perfect on the season. Kim Henry had a goal and assist and Liz Brokaw also scored for Prospect Hall (3-0). Michelle Burdette, Mandy Conway and Kim Hopkins added assists and Lindsey Weaver had six saves.


Martinsburg 3, Hedgesville 1

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - The No. 7 Bulldogs got three goals in a four-minute span in the fourth quarter to rally past the No. 9 Eagles in a lightning-shortened game.

Down 1-0, Brian Beverly tied it with 10 minutes left on a pass from Pat Gaidrich for the Bulldogs (5-1-1). Gaidrich found Kit Sanders for the lead with 7:30 to go and Gareth Hobbs scored from Daniel Ansari 90 seconds later to finish it.

TJ 2, Bowie 2

BOWIE, Md. - The No. 1 Patriots twice rallied from one-goal deficits to secure a tie on the road in a game stopped 10 minutes early by darkness.

Down 1-0, Jared Viola tied it with one minute left in the first half on a 22-yard shot for TJ (1-0-1). Then down 2-1 in the second half, Bryan Cain tied it on a penalty kick in the 67th minute. The Patriots outshot the Bulldogs, 9-4.

Mercersburg 2, Shalom 0

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Kevin Walsh scored on a pass from Garth Semple with two minutes left in the first half and Jack Herlong scored five minutes into the second half to lead the Blue Storm (1-1).

Clear Spring 4, Smithsburg 3

SMITHSBURG - Gerad Haupt scored his second goal with 4:30 to play and Chris Everitts completed the comeback in the final two minutes to give the Blazers a win.

Justin Michael scored from Haupt, who then scored his first goal to give the Blazers (2-2) a 2-1 lead. Smithsburg (0-3) rallied with goals by Justin Bates, Steve Gyurisin and Matt Holsinger before Clear Spring closed it. Jared Timmons assisted on Everitts' game-winning goal.

Brandon Rethemyer had six saves for Smithsburg, and Jeremiah Johnson had seven saves for Clear Spring.

Mechanicsburg 4, Waynesboro 3

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Mechanicsburg erased a 3-1 deficit in the final nine minutes of the match to beat Waynesboro in the Mid Penn Commonwealth.

Mechanicsburg scored three goals in a span of three minutes to take the lead.

Brian Lisko, John Onikepe abd Phil Woodring scored goals for the Indians (2-3, 0-1). John Webber and Nick Kipe each had an assist. Chris Gilliland and James Woodring combined to make six saves.

Greencastle 4, James Buchanan 3

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Micah Laughlin scored a pair of goals to lead Greencastle over James Buchanan in a Mid Penn Colonial match.

Shuaiming Peng and Jon Bitner also scored for the Blue Devils (4-3, 1-0).

Jason Bard, Shea Stouffer and Matt Miller scored for the Rockets (1-2, 1-1), with Miller's tally coming on a penalty shot. Mike Miller had an assist.

Catoctin 1, Middletown 0

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Cory Endlich scored the only goal in the final minute of the math as Catoctin beat Middletown for the first time in more than 20 years.

Middletown (0-3, 0-1) outshot the Cougars, 20-10.

Catoctin improves to 2-1, 1-1.

Heritage 7, Faith 0

Ian Ellis scored two goals and Ryan Marquiss had a goal and two assists to lead Heritage over Faith Christian. Chris Knable, Drew Kidd, Micah Shatzer and Justin Cline each had one goal for Heritage (3-1-1).

North Hagerstown 3, Walkersville 1

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Mike Brooks, Tim Salvagno and Dustin Showalter each scored a goal to lead North Hagerstown over Walkersville in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League match.

David Chaney had two saves for the Hubs (4-0, 1-0), who outshot the Lions, 10-4.

Josh Essland scored the only goal for Walkersville.

North led the JV game 4-0 before play was suspended at the end of the first half.

CARLISLE, Pa. - Sarah Kriner had six kills, seven points and two aces to lead the No. 1 Trojans to a 15-9, 15-6 win in the Mid Penn. Lauren Kegerreis and Lori Wilkinson also had, Steph VanBrakle had 20 assists and Meghan Angle closed it out with five straight service points for Chambersburg (3-0).
