Smithsburg win girls soccer game in OT


CATOCTIN, Md. - Kyley Thompson scored her second goal to lead Smithsburg to an overtime win over Catoctin 3-2 on Monday night.

Thompson's first goal came 10 minutes into the match and Morgan Church scored to give the Leopards a 2-0 lead. Leopard goalkeeper Lauren Church had 12 saves.

Walkersville 5, FSK 1

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Leigh Hileman scored three goals, Kelly Martin had a goal and an assist, Erin Carraghan had a goal and Carolyn Muller, Meg Douds and Katie Butt each had an assist for Walkersville (3-1, 2-0 in the MVAL).

JV: Walkersville, 2-0.

Clear Spring 4, Beall 3

CLEAR SPRING - Tawnya Blair scored three goals ans assisted on the fourth to lead Clear Spring to its first win. Jessica Cunningham scored the other goal and had an assist for Clear Spring (1-2). Lauren Ebersole and Allison Gozora each had an assist.


Kerri Mowen made nine saves for the Blazers.

JV: Beall, 1-0.


Frederick 2, Howard 1

FREDERICK, Md. - Greg Thornton and Tim McCallum scored goals in the first half as Frederick improved to 3-0. Goalie Justin Shade made eight saves.

JV: Frederick 6, Howard 0: Clark Seniff scored two goals as Frederick improved to 3-0.


Grace 3, Shalom 1

Susanna Hill was 21-for-21 in serves with three aces and 15 kills as Grace Academy defeated Shalom Christian Academy, 14-16, 15-13, 15-12, 15-10.

Lauren Durbin was 19-for-19 with three aces and added 11 kills and 2 blocksfor Grace (3-0, 1-0). Heather Kendall chipped in with six aces and 24 assists.

Middletown 3, Catoctin 1

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Middletown improved to 2-0 with a 15-4, 15-11, 8-15, 15-3 victory. Amanda Kaufman had nine kills and eight assists, Dana Pederson had nine service points, Breane Hathaway had seven kills and four service points and Mandy Hashman had 23 assists and two service points.

Sara Helmick led the Cougars (0-2) with seven kills while Heather Sharpes added seven service points.

JV: Middletown, 17-15, 16-14. Kathy Phillips had nine points and Danielle White had four points.

Hancock 3, Paw Paw 0

HANCOCK - Lacy McCusker and Heather Fowler each had 13 points as Hancock made a clean sweep of Paw Paw, 15-7,15-1,15-6.

Fowler had two kills while McCusker had four aces and six kills. Alicia Barnard had seven points with three aces and Beth Sterner had four points with six assists for the Panthers.

Smithsburg 3, South 0

Jolee Warrenfeltz earned 17 service points with eight aces as Heather Ashley recorded nine kills and four blocks as Smithsburg picked up a road win, defeating South, 15-2, 15-2, 15-13.

Lauren Richards and Michelle Feiser each had nine kills to help Smithsburg (2-0 overall, 1-0 MVAL). For South, Allison wine had four kills and six blocks and Jillian Watson had four kills. Jessica Heinz went 12-for-12 from the service line and Cara Crouse had 11 assists.

JV: Smithsburg won to improve to 2-0.

Southern Fulton 0, Tussey Mountain 2

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Tussey Mountain handed Southern Fulton their third loss in a 15-8, 15-8 match.

Southern Fulton is now 1-3.

JV: Southern Fulton improved to 4-0 with a 15-5, 15-7 win.

McConnellsburg 2, Everett 0

EVERETT, Pa. - Kyla Seville used six kills and two blocks along with Jade Anthony's eight kills and three blocks to lead McConnellsburg over Everett, 15-10, 16-14.

Niki Chesnut had five service points and 11 assists as Erica Keller registered five points, three kills and two blocks. Elaina Paruch added four kills and Kara Carma helped with three blocks and four assists to defeat Everett.

Jefferson 3, Berkeley Springs 1

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Angie Webb had 11 service points and eight kills, Sheridan Lynch had 20 service points and two aces and China Gonzalez had 11 service points in a 15-11, 15-4, 20-22, 15-6 win.


Smithsburg 158, North 159, Clear Spring 188

Smithsburg fired a school-record team score at Black Rock Golf Course to win a tri-match by one stroke. Seiji Harari led the Leopards with a 34 while Ashley Grier added a 36, Steve Young had 44 and Jared Acre shot 44. Kevin Barkow led North with a 37 and Brandon Hendrickson had a school record 39 for Clear Spring.


South 30, North 0

David Minor ran for one touchdown and threw for another leading South (1-1). Anton Jones and Rigo Valentine also rushed for touchdowns.


MCI wins tourney

OCEAN CITY, Md. - MCI of Hagerstown won the Department of Corrections softball tournament over the weekend, defeating RCI of Hagerstown 16-6 in the finals.

Brent Taylor and Troy Englehart each hit .813 and Jeff Foltz, Bob McPherson, Jim Taylor, Craig Rotruck and Dick Dayhoff each batted over .700. Each team needed to play two females. Candy Mills and Cathy Kline played for MCI, which went 5-0.

RCI's top hitters were Barry Petty and Darren Stottlemyre.

Wash. Co. Frostbite

Knights of the Turntable 26-14, Hatch & Kirk 7-7: Brad Moore, Alan Moore, Joe Hewitt, Chuck Smith, Danny Wallech, Mike Kelbaugh, Mike Grimm and Don Hardy all hit .750 for The Knights of the Turntable in the opener. In the nightcap, Jamie Stotler, Dave Moss and Glenn Harvey all had three hits each for Hatch & Kirk, including a homer by Moss. Danny Wallech, Jodi Rohrer and Don Hardy all had three hits for the Knights.
