Hawks sweep Hagerstown Invitational

The Hagerstown Community College volleyball team dominated the field in the Hagerstown Invitational at the HCC athletic complex Saturday, sweeping the tournament without losing a game.

The Hawks (10-3) blitzed the competition, beating Rockingham (N.C.) 15-0, 15-2, Nassau (N.Y.) 15-1, 15-3 and Mitchell (Conn.) 15-2, 15-8 in pool play.

HCC dropped Rockingham in the semifinals 15-6, 15-4 before finishing off the sweep against Mitchell, 15-2, 15-8.

"We had some stretches where we played as good as any team I've had in 21 seasons here," said HCC coach Marlys Palmer. "We looked that sharp."

The Hawks had four players named to the All-Tournament Team: Kellie Martin, Rachel Bachtell, Erica McCann and Casey Nogle.

Martin had 86 assists, 24 service points and 12 digs.

Bachtell had 30 kills with a .541 hitting percentage, 19 points and 11 digs.

McCann had 22 points - including nine aces - 13 kills with a .406 hitting percentage and four blocks.

Nogle had 23 points, 17 kills and 11 digs.

"It had to have been tough picking that team, because everyone played well and contributed," Palmer said.

Lindsey Miller had 16 kills, 12 points and five blocks. Renee Baker had 19 points and eight kills.

The Hawks open play in the Maryland JuCo Conference Tuesday at Essex.
