Eagles soar to Hub Classic win

Only seven matches into the season, and the Hedgesville volleyball team already has claimed a little bit of revenge.

The Eagles made up for the only loss of the season twice over, beating Hampshire in pool play and then again 15-11, 15-12 Saturday afternoon to win the Hub Classic at North Hagerstown High School.

"We played them first and last," Hedgesville coach Susan Davis said. "I think nerves played a factor the first time (a five-set loss in the season opener). And it's always a battle with them."

The Eagles (6-1) got to the final with a 2-0 win over Cumberland Valley Christian. Hampshire beat Grace Academy in the other semifinal, 15-10, 15-12.

For the Knights, it was a little redemption for last season, where they lost a one-game playoff to advance out of pool play.

"It was a real pleasant surprise," said Grace Academy coach Lisa Hill, whose team defeated city power North on the way to the semis. "The girls worked really hard and are starting to play well together. And we got to see the results of that today."
