Two men charged with marijuana, intent to deliver


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Chambersburg police charged two men with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver after a borough bicycle officer made a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon.

Police said Corey L. Bonitto, 25, of 153 W. King St., Chambersburg, and James Anthony Irvin, 20, of 437 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, were charged after being stopped on South Federal Street at 3:55 p.m. Bonitto was also charged with possession of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia, according to police.

The report said the officer stopped the vehicle after recognizing Bonitto, who also had an outstanding warrant on a simple assault charge.

Sobriety check point scheduled for Franklin Co.


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police said Thursday a sobriety check point will be held in Franklin County this weekend.

The announcement said the checkpoint will be held at an undisclosed location that "marks a high volume of DUI-related crashes and activity." The police recommended that motorists not drink and drive, or have a designated driver.

Police said there was an average of 39 alcohol-related accidents in Pennsylvania each day in 1999. The state averages 37 people injured and more than one killed each day from accidents involving drunken drivers.

Montgomery Township burglary is investigated


MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police were investigating a burglary in Montgomery Township sometime between Aug. 27 and Wednesday.

The report said a shed was broken into at the Fort Loudon Road home of Ernie Stewart. A Porter circular saw and a Dwalt half-inch hammer drill were stolen, police said.

Vehicle hits school bus at Funkstown, deputies say


FUNKSTOWN - A woman driving a 2000 Dodge Neon crashed into the back of a school bus Thursday morning, the Washington County Sheriff's Department said.

The woman, Julia Ann Gause, 20, of Keedysville, Md., was ticketed for failing to yield to avoid a collision, police said. She was taken to Washington County Hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

Deputy Scott Smith said that the Washington County school bus was picking up children at about 7:28 a.m. on Hebb Road, near Funkstown Road.

The bus, driven by Carol Linda White, 56, of Hagerstown, was stopped near the top of a hill and its red lights were flashing, Smith said.

Gause's vision was obscured by the sun as she approached the top of the grade behind the bus, he said.

White and the school children were not injured. The children were transferred to another bus and driven to school, police said.

City police investigate carjacking at Wal-Mart


A man carjacked a woman's vehicle in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart Superstore on U.S.40 Thursday evening, Hagerstown City Police said.

The man fled alone in the car on U.S. 40 east around 9:30 p.m., police said.
