Friday's local roundup - Trojans defend top ranking


WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Bryan Cain had a hat trick and fellow striker Joey Higbee had a goal and two assists as No. 1 Thomas Johnson opened its season with a resounding 6-1 victory at Walkersville Thursday night.

Gus Martz also scored and Dave Ashwal and Jon Gardner had assists for TJ, which got four saves from Eric Ferguson. For Walkersville (0-2), Brad Palmer scored on a penalty kick and Jared Herman had nine saves.

Catoctin 4, New Oxford 2

NEW OXFORD, Pa. - Goalkeeper Chris Jurchak came through with 16 saves to help Catoctin got its first win of the season. Cory Endlich scored two goals, while Andy Folk and Eric Snyder added one goal each for Catoctin (1-1).

Waynesboro 4, Harrisburg 1

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Zach Tanner had one goal and one assist to help Waynesboro (1-2) get past Harrisburg. Andrew Eshleman, Phil Woodring and Nick Kipe added one goal each.


Frederick 3, Goretti 1

FREDERICK, Md. - Matt Richter, Matt Slagle and Dan Corbin scored one goal apiece to lift Frederick (2-0) past St. Maria Goretti. Tyler Weneck made 10 saves for the Gaels (0-3), and Ben Hood had the team's only goal.

JB 2, Boiling Springs 1

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Matt Myers and Shea Stouffer scored one goal each to help James Buchanan (1-3) edge Boiling Springs.

Chambersburg 3, R. Land 1

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Goalkeeper Mike Richards had seven saves to help No. 3 Chambersburg (3-1) to a win. Nathan Wingerd scored two goals and Kevin Roland added one goal for Chambersburg. Drew Wellman had two assists for Chambersburg.

Greencastle 3, Palmyra 2

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Matt Fridley's goal with just over 10 minutes to play sparked the No. 8 Blue Devils to a win.

Shuaiming Peng got Greencastle (3-1) on the board, scoring on a free kick with 22 minutes to go in the first half. John Bittner also scored for Greencastle and Ryan Hoffman had 16 saves.

Highland View 1, Heritage 1

Ryan Marquiss scored unassisted in the second half to salvage a tie for the Eagles (2-1-1) on the road. Eduardo Bollati scored from Stephen Byrkit in the first half for Highland View (1-1-1). Wil Iverson had nine saves for the Tartans, and Justin Cline had five for Heritage.


Catoctin 1, Linganore 0

THURMONT, Md. - Lisa Folk scored the only goal of the game on an assist from Catherine Olsen as the No. 10 Cougars opened with a win. Michele Bennett recorded 10 saves for the shutout.

Walkersville 4, Boonsboro 2

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Kelly Martin scored twice as the Lions broke a 2-2 tie to win their season opener against the No. 5 Warriors in the MVAL Tuesday night. Leigh Hileman had a goal and two assists for Walkersville, Erin Carraghan also socred and Hannah Matesa added an assist. Janelle Hezlep had five saves for the win.

For Boonsboro, Ashley Gossert and Ashley Reeder both scored and Bethany Windle had an assist. Cara Peckens had seven saves.


Boonsboro 3, South 1

Leah Easterday contributed 25 assists, 11 kills and 10 service points to help Boonsboro (1-1) defeat the Rebels, 10-15, 15-8, 19-17, 15-10. Mandy Binder had 12 points, 10 assists and 19 kills for Boonsboro (1-1) and Kelly Baldwin added 14 kills, 10 service points and two aces.

Allison Wine went 24-for-25 from the service line with 19 kills for South (1-1). Cara Crouse had 25 assists. JV: South, 2-0.

Middletown 3, Walkersville 0

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Mandy Harshman had 20 assists and four aces as the Knights cruised to a 15-7, 15-0, 15-8 victory in the MVAL. Amanda Kauffman added 10 kills and Aubrey Pfau had six kills and two aces for Middletown (2-0). JV: Walkersville, 2-1.

Hedgesville 3, Jefferson 0

HEDGESVILLE, W. Va. - Tracey Regalbuto contributed 22 assists and three kills to help No. 8 Hedgesville (2-1) sweep Jefferson (0-1), 15-10, 15-3, 15-10. Kerri Spies had 15 service points and seven kills, Keri Jackson got 11 kills and Nancy Regalbuto added 10 kills for Hedgesville.

Musselman 3, Goretti 2

INWOOD, W.Va. - The Applemen came back from a fourth-game loss for their first win of the season, 8-15, 15-11, 15-3, 9-15, 15-6, in the Apple Valley League.

Heidi Siirtola had seven kills, Brett Stone had six kills and setters Kelly Wills and Corrinne Brong combined for 22 assists for Goretti (0-3). JV: Musselman, 2-0.

McConn. 2, Tussey Mt. 0

MCCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Kyla Seville had 11 service points, seven kills and two blocks in a 15-5, 15-6 victory that keeps the No. 6 Spartans perfect in the Sideling Hill League.

Niki Chesnut had four blocks and 10 assists and Heidi Swope had 14 assists for McConnellsburg (3-0, 3-0). Erica Culler added four kills and Heather DeShong had eight points.

Chambersburg 2, R. Land 0

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The No. 1 Trojans scored the first 26 points of the match, rolling to an easy win in their season opener Tuesday, 15-0, 15-4. Lauren Kegerreis had four kills, two blocks and three aces while Alyssa Messinger had 10 service points and four aces - just in Game 1. Steph VanBrakle added 14 assists and Sarah Kriner led with six kills. JV: Chambersburg, 2-0.
