New Health Officer Starts

By SCOTT BUTKI / Staff Writer

William G. Christoffel started his new job as Washington County's health officer Wednesday and will take the reins from outgoing Health Officer Robert Parker around Oct. 1.

He will work with Parker for the next few weeks and meet the staff and others, Christoffel said Wednesday.

He said he was pleased to have received the appointment.

Christoffel, of Mount Airy, Md., has about 30 years of experience as an administrator with federal public health programs.

His appointment marks the first time the county's top health officer has not been a medical doctor.

Other Maryland counties have hired administrators as health officers to head county health departments and have doctors in other high-level positions, Washington County Commissioners President Gregory I. Snook said.

The County Commissioners nominated Christoffel at their Aug. 29 meeting and that nomination was approved by Georges Benjamin, Maryland's Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene.

The County Commissioners had voted July 18 to nominate a Pennsylvania doctor for the position.

That nominee, Dr. Victor S.B. Jorden, an anesthesiologist from Media, Pa., later turned down the position for personal reasons, Parker said.
