'Roaders seek return to Byrd

By AL DITZEL / Staff Writer

BRUNSWICK, Md. - After a recent practice at Brunswick, some players were walking through the locker room and commented on the bulletin board, which had a fine drawing by senior J.J. Morrison and a picture of Byrd Stadium, the site of the Railroaders' loss in the state 1A final to Forestville last year.

"That's what it's all about,'' a player said to some of the younger players. "I want get back there so bad. That grass - it's beautiful. It's plush, like a carpet.''

Since that loss, Brunswick has made getting back to that title game its main goal.

"There's good and bad to that,'' Brunswick coach Mark Mitchell said. "It's good because we want to the kids to set long-term goals for themselves. That's one of the things we like to teach the students here, to think about goals down the road. It's bad because with that goal comes pressure.''

The pressure to win has caused many a sports team to fail and fail miserably, but Brunswick appears to have been building toward this goal for the last few years. Two years ago, Brunswick lost in the first round of the state playoffs before reaching the final last year.

"I felt that Forestville was the better team, but I thought we had our chances to win,'' Mitchell said. "You can't ask for much more than that.''

Brunswick, 10-3 overall and 7-2 in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League, understands that to reach its goal, it must start out quickly.

"We need to play well (in September),'' Mitchell said. "We have our goals on the state - winning the league title isn't way up there. You have to understand that we don't need to go unbeaten to make the states. Because we play in a conference with a lot of 2A schools, we can go 7-2 and make the states. A team like Middletown can't afford losses or it's out of the state tournament.''

Brunswick has 13 players returning with varsity experience, including quarterback Marcus Smith, who returns after not playing at all as a junior.

Alan Webber, who gained all-MVAL honors in Smith's place, will return to his more natural halfback position.

"Alan had no problem with that,'' Mitchell said. "He's always been a whatever's-good-for-the-team type of kid.''

Other returnees include Chris Owens, Matt French, Karl Pfister, James May, Bobby Vivian, Chris Bush, Nick Gordon, Joe Amick, Wes Shafer, Chad Care and Morrison. Morrison will miss a few games because of an injury.

Mitchell said the offensive and defensive lines will be helped by senior Adam Escamilla, who at 285 pounds will add some bulk.

"(Adam's) worked really hard and we think he'll help us,'' Mitchell said.

Mitchell said that while winning is certainly important, it's not the most important part of the Brunswick program.

"This program was here before I got here and it'll be here after I leave. I'm just the caretaker right now,'' Mitchell said. "We hope to teach the kids a lot of things here, including that we care for the players first as people, then students and then as football players.

"One thing I'd like the kids to take away from this program is to care,'' Mitchell said. "That might sound kind of corny. My generation has been known as the "me'' generation. I'd like for our players to learn to care about one another, not only as teammates, but as people. If they can take that with them, I'll be satisfied.''
