Mayor racks up $2,500 tab

During the 1999-2000 fiscal year Hagerstown Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II spent about $2,500 from his expense account, according to city Finance Department records.

Bruchey's expenses included:

- About $1,360 for registration and hotel room charges incurred while attending Maryland Municipal League events.

- $455 for Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce events.

- $470 for registration, transportation and hotel room charges for the Maryland Mayors Conference in Annapolis.

Under the city code, the mayor's expense account is limited to $3,000 annually.

Bruchey said Municipal League events are especially important because of the "networking" with officials form other parts of the state.

"It's good to find out what everyone else is doing and not doing," Bruchey said.
