Wednesday's local roundup - Smithsburg girls shut out FSK


FSK and SmithsburgSMITHSBURG - Morgan Church started the season with a hat trick, getting two of her goals off assists from Kyley Thompson, to lead No. 8 Smithsburg to an 8-0 win over Francis Scott Key in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League opener for both teams Tuesday night.

Church and Thompson connected in each half, and Steph Smith and Alyson Daughtridge both added a goal and an assist for the Leopards (1-0). Amy Metz, Becky Hoffman and Laura Spessard also scored for Smithsburg, and keeper Lauren Church had six saves in her first game since tearing an ACL in the Washington County Public Schools Tournament last fall.

Walkersville 4, Boonsboro 2

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - No. 5 Boonsboro rallied from a two-goal deficit, but Alexis Neopolitan gave the Lions a win in the season opener for both teams. Kelly Martin and Leigh Hielman also scored for Walkersville. Ashley Gossert scored from Bethany Windle and Ashley Reeder scored for the Warriors. Cara Peckens had seven saves.


Chambersburg 2, Cedar Cliff 1

HIGHLAND PARK, Pa. - Nathan Wingerd scored from Kevin Roland with under 10 minutes left in the first half to give the No. 3 Trojans the lead. Nick Shively scored with 15 minutes to play on an assist from Andrew Dillon for Chambersburg (2-1).

Mike Richards lost his shutout with 9 seconds left and only needed four saves to get the win.

McConnellsburg 5, NBC 0

MCCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Steve Weller had two goals to lead No. 4 McConnellsburg to a shutout in its Sideling Hill League opener. Chad Sauders and Matt Wolfe each had one goal for the Spartans (2-1) and Jordan Ott had one goal and one assist. Adam Gress had two assists and Drew Washabaugh had one.

Boonsboro 2, South 1

Joel Forsyth scored with 90 seconds left in the second overtime to give the Warriors a win in the season and MVAL opener for both teams.

Rob Pongratz scored from Chris Lantz to give No. 7 Boonsboro a 1-0 lead in the first half, but Sean Shrader tied it on an assist by Sharew Hailu for the Rebels. Boonsboro goalie Brian Eury had 12 saves.

Martinsburg 2, Jefferson 1

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Daniel Ansari capped a Martinsburg comeback as the No. 9 Bulldogs picked up a win. Matt Boyer scored on a penalty kick to give Jefferson (3-2) a 1-0 lead in the second half, but Bradley Dodson evened it early in the third quarter. Mark Durbin had 12 saves for the Cougars and Aaron Smith had seven saves for Martinsburg (4-1).

North 2, Linganore 0

NEW MARKET, Md. - Mike Brooks and Luke Mongrain scored goals and Dustin Showalter and Stephen Zachariah picked up assists for the No. 10 Hubs in their season opener. JV: North, 6-5.

Camp Hill 7, J. Buchanan 2

CAMP HILL, Pa. - Ellis Beddard and Matt Miller both scored for the Rockets, who couldn't overcome the loss of goalkeeper Jeremy Custer. Peter Dell and Mike Miller had assists for JB (0-3).

Frederick 7, Brunswick 0

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Matt Slagle had one goal and two assists for Frederick in its season opener. Greg Thornton and Andrew Barrie each had one goal and one assist and Dan Corbin, Aaron Deckenback, Fredie Genau and Justin Saltzman each had one goal for the Cadets. Aaron Bush and Tim McCallum each had one assist.

Hershey 3, Waynesboro 0

HERSHEY, Pa. - Steve Noriega, James Nanari and Matt Sypolt scored for Hershey. Sophomore James Woodring had six saves for Waynesboro (0-2).

Grace 2, Heritage 0

Josh Barnhart scored unassisted and Ryan Myers scored from Darren Sweeney to lead Grace in its season opener against Heritage (2-1). Mark Derby had 13 saves for the Knights.

Shalom 4, Highland View 2

The Tartans (1-1) got goals from Fabricio Kos and Eduardo Bollati, but had no answer for four first-half goals by the Flames. Will Iverson had 15 saves for HVA.


Williamsport 3, Walkersville 0

Kristine Porac had 17 assists and 11 points to lead No. 5 Williamsport to a season-opening 15-2, 15-2, 15-3 win in the MVAL. Danielle Munson had seven kills and six digs, Maggie Miller had 13 service points and four kills and Katie Spoonire had five kills for the Wildcats. JV: Williamsport 2, Walkersville 0.

Greencastle 2, Bermudian 0

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Liz Rock had six service points, three kills and seven digs to lead No. 7 Greencastle (1-0) to a 15-8, 15-6 victory over Bermudian Springs. Tonya Petersheim had three kills and three blocks and Erin Berger had five kills for the Blue Devils.

Waynesboro 2, CD East 0

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Katie Ferree had 12 assists and Jana Reitz had five kills to lead the No. 4 Maidens in their season opener. Becky Toms added four kills and Melinda Reichard had three kills. JV: Waynesboro, 2-0.

Berkeley Springs 3, Goretti 0

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Nicole Kesecker had 13 service points for Berkeley Springs in a 15-9, 15-6, 15-12 victory. Megan Close had six assists, and Megan Zahnow had five. Julie Scherpf had three aces. Nicole Summers had five aces and four kills. JV: Berkeley Springs, 2-0.
